The Supporting Character Everyone Loved to Hate in Sunnydale

Adam Kaufman was born in Virginia in 1970, and his training in New York gave him the tools he needed to survive in Hollywood. In 1999 he landed the role of Parker Abrams in the fourth season of Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was the guy who broke the heroine's heart, and that earned him the scorn of an entire generation of teenagers who followed the Joss Whedon series.

And it worked.

Before that role, he had only made fleeting appearances. But late-1990s television made it possible for a new face to become familiar in just three episodes. Kaufman used that visibility to land a role on Dawson's Creek that same year. There he played Ethan, a character who forced Jack McPhee to confront his own identity at a time when storylines like that were still uncharted territory.

In 2000 he appeared in the independent film Metropolis. It didn't get a major release, but it showed he could carry a scene without relying on laugh tracks or teen drama. Kaufman racked up more than twenty credits in top-rated shows before turning thirty-five.

Spielberg's Leap into Science Fiction

Steven Spielberg was cast in 2002 to star in the miniseries Taken. He played Charlie Keys in a production that handled movie-level budgets for the small screen. It was a demanding shoot because of the heavy visual effects and the need to keep the storyline consistent across several decades of fictional history.

That project gave him a different standing in the industry. But Kaufman never chased the covers of fashion magazines. He preferred the security of procedural dramas. While filming Without a Trace, he met Poppy Montgomery, and the two began a relationship that lasted until 2011. They had a son in 2007 named Jackson.

His personal life has always stayed far from the scandals of Los Angeles.

In 2005 he worked on Haunted, and shortly after he joined the cast of Mad Men for a brief arc in 2007. Back then, actors with his kind of profile were essential for holding their own opposite the big stars. He didn't need to be the center of attention for casting directors to keep calling him.

The Stability of a Supporting Actor

The 2010s were a busy stretch of action and suspense series for him. In 2014, he joined State of Affairs to play Lucas Newsome. He worked side by side with Katherine Heigl on a political espionage storyline that lasted only one season on NBC. The show was canceled after airing thirteen episodes due to its low ratings on Monday nights.

But Kaufman didn't stop. In 2017 he landed the role of Mack in The Brave. The series followed a special operations unit, and the physical training was far more intense than in his earlier work. They shot much of the footage on location to give the military missions a sense of realism.

And a commitment to realism doesn't always guarantee a renewal.

Kaufman has built a steady career without big peaks of fame or slides into obscurity. In 2019 he appeared in Whiskey Cavalier, and a year later, in 2020, he joined FBI. He's an actor who understands how American television works and knows how to fit into ensemble casts without throwing the scene out of balance.

In 2022 he filmed an appearance on the series 9-1-1, playing a character named Rafe. The episode was titled Fear-o-Phobia and was directed by Marcus Stokes. Production costs for that episode topped $5 million because of the technical rescue sequences.
