Poppy Petal Emma Elizabeth Deveraux Donahue arrived in Los Angeles at eighteen with a copy of a book on how to make it in Hollywood tucked under her arm. She had no contacts or agents, but she carried an unshakable confidence that let her sleep on other people's couches until she landed her first small testimonial roles.
Reality was less kind than any self-help manual.
Through most of the nineties, she built a run of brief appearances on series such as NYPD Blue and Party of Five. Her first real breakthrough came in 2001 when she played Marilyn Monroe in the miniseries Blonde. That performance caught the attention of casting directors at CBS and changed her status in the industry overnight.
In 2002 she accepted the role of Samantha Spade in Without a Trace. The series ran for seven seasons and earned her eight million dollars a year at the peak of her career. But the shooting schedule was exhausting, and the procedural storylines limited her creative control off set.
And the bet on the police genre paid off for a decade.
After the New York missing persons office closed, she looked for a project that would let her take part in technical decisions. In 2011 she landed Unforgettable. She played Carrie Wells, a detective with hypermnesia who remembered every detail of her life with surgical precision.
The series was canceled by CBS and rescued by A&E before its final ending in 2016. The experience taught her how cable TV financing works and how production companies' interests can overlap.
That was when she decided she didn't want to wait for the phone to ring.
In 2019 she produced and starred in Reef Break for ABC. The shoot moved to Australia, and she took full control of the narrative and the look of the coastal drama. But the audience did not respond the way the executives hoped, and production was halted after thirteen episodes aired.
Montgomery has diversified into real estate and lifestyle brand management in California. Married to Shawn Sanford (a Microsoft executive) since 2014, she has kept a low media profile outside of mandatory promotion for her work. Her Instagram functions more as an aesthetic catalog than as a personal set diary.
Because her goal was never the fleeting fame of the red carpet.
In 2021 she founded her own production company to develop content centered on female characters with complex, dark pasts. The company operates out of the United States and manages adaptation rights to international crime novels. The budget for her most recent literary rights acquisition topped two million dollars in the independent market.
