Adrian Paul arrived in Hollywood with a backpack and little more than his training in dance and martial arts. He was 1985. In London he had worked as a model and choreographer, but American cinema demanded tougher profiles.
He made his television debut in The Colbys, playing a Russian dancer. It was a brief role, but it taught him that his athletic physique was his best professional asset in an industry obsessed with the aesthetics of the 1980s.
He spent years jumping from series to series without finding a real foothold. He took part in War of the Worlds and in the 1991 version of Dark Shadows. On that shoot he worked alongside actors who had already been written off as far as their international careers went.
Then the sword appeared.
In 1992, the producers of Highlander were looking for a face to carry on the story of the original film. Paul wasn't their first choice. But his skill in Hung Gar and Choy Li Fut convinced the casting directors that he could perform his own action scenes.
For six seasons he played Duncan MacLeod. The show was an international sales phenomenon that generated millions in profits across European and American markets. Paul spent fourteen hours a day on set, shuttling between Vancouver and Paris.
The actor insisted that the combat choreography be realistic, because he was fed up with the slow movements of conventional action cinema. So he began training with Japanese swordsmanship masters to perfect his use of the katana.
The series ended in 1998. At that point, Paul tried to break away from the character by taking on lower-budget projects such as Convergence in 1999. But the weight of the immortal was too heavy for top-tier casting directors.
It was not an easy road.
He tried to take back control of his career by moving into production. In 2000, he released Highlander: Endgame alongside Christopher Lambert. The film had a budget of $25 million and barely managed to recoup its costs at the global box office.
By 2007, his link to the franchise that made him famous had become purely commercial. He produced and starred in Highlander: The Source. The technical result was so poor that the movie went straight to television in many countries.
Paul realized his future lay in training and nostalgia. In 2016 he founded The Sword Experience. It is a company that runs seminars around the world where fans pay to learn sword techniques at historic locations.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2019 he shot the film Wild League in Russia, playing a British aristocrat. The project went largely unnoticed outside the Eastern market. Paul has kept taking supporting roles in B-movie productions to fund his charity foundation The Peace Fund.
In 2024, she took part in The Legend of White Dragon. It was a crowdfunded project that aimed to revive the aesthetic of Power Rangers for adult audiences. The film earned $64,000 in its opening weekend in select U.S. theaters.
