Aisling Franciosi was born in Dublin in 1993 and grew up in a trilingual household. Her father is Italian, and she studied French and Italian at Trinity College Dublin before devoting herself fully to acting. In 2013, she landed her first major role in the crime series The Fall. She played a teenager obsessed with a serial killer and held her own opposite Jamie Dornan for three consecutive seasons.
She wasn't chasing fame.
In 2016, she appeared in the sixth season of Game of Thrones, bringing Lyanna Stark to life. It was a role of just a few minutes, yet it resolved the biggest mystery of HBO's fantasy epic. And although media exposure was massive, she chose to return to art-house cinema with projects that demanded real physical endurance. In 2017, she took part in the series Genius, produced by National Geographic, about the life of Albert Einstein.
But the shift in scale came with a shoot in the forests of Tasmania. In 2018, she starred in The Nightingale under the direction of Jennifer Kent. The script required her to learn Palawa kani, a nearly extinct Aboriginal language, and to face scenes of extreme violence. The film won the Special Jury Prize at Venice, and her performance was described as one of the most raw of the decade.
Technique won out over instinct.
In 2020, she moved on to darker material with the miniseries I Know This Much Is True. She worked alongside Mark Ruffalo under the direction of Derek Cianfrance in a six-episode production. Critics praised her ability to convey trauma without relying on excessive dialogue, so her name began to gain serious traction among casting directors for psychological thrillers.
In 2022, God’s Creatures premiered at the Directors' Fortnight in Cannes. She shared the screen with Emily Watson in an Irish rural drama about guilt and silence in isolated communities. Filming took place on natural locations in County Donegal. The production avoided the usual commercial circuits to focus on independent film festivals in Europe and the United States.
Silence is her greatest tool.
In 2023, she made the leap to major studio films with The Last Voyage of the Demeter. She played a stowaway aboard the ship carrying Dracula's coffin to London. The film had a budget of $45 million and was her first major experience on a set with complex digital effects. Yet she kept the sobriety that defines her, even surrounded by prosthetics and fake blood.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Speak No Evil, the American version of the Danish horror hit. She shared the spotlight with James McAvoy in a story about social discomfort and simmering violence. Filming took place on farms in Gloucester and on locations in Croatia. The production contract included specific clauses on safety for scenes involving physical risk.
For the Rothko project, directed by Sam Taylor-Johnson, the shooting schedule was set for 2025 with an initial budget of €15 million. The production team locked in locations in New York at the end of the previous year.
