Alex Høgh Andersen

Alex Høgh Andersen didn't walk in his most important audition. He dragged himself across the floor of a room in Dublin while the other candidates tried their luck with conventional dialogue. They were looking for Ivar the Boneless for the series Vikings in 2016, and he understood the character was not a matter of the script but of pure physical endurance.

And the gamble paid off.

Andersen was born in Slagelse in 1994 and learned his craft at a youth theater school in Denmark. Before the international industry set its sights on his steel-blue gaze, the actor had already shot A War in 2015. Tobias Lindholm's film was Oscar-nominated and taught him how to understand cinema through restraint.

But his arrival in History Channel's historical drama was a culture shock. For four seasons he played a man who had lost the use of his legs, carrying the full dramatic weight through facial expressions and a voice that cut through the screen. Acting from the floor demands an energy that traditional acting schools don't teach.

The Camera Behind the Camera

Andersen doesn't just wait for someone to yell action. His interest in visual composition led him to develop a parallel career as a professional photographer. On film sets he often brings his own camera to capture the behind-the-scenes side of productions. This technical side helps him understand light and framing from a perspective many actors overlook.

In 2021 he appeared in The Shadow in My Eye, a Danish war drama about the accidental bombing of a school in Copenhagen. Here he moved away from the brutality of his earlier roles to explore guilt and human trauma. It was a move to keep audiences from typecasting him indefinitely.

The Danish film industry remains his main refuge.

So he alternates big productions with local projects where he has more creative control. In 2022 he starred in the short film Uden dig, an intimate piece that had little commercial distribution beyond European film festival circuits. He enjoys that balance between the noise of streaming platforms and the quiet of auteur cinema.

Production and New Formats

In 2023, he moved into content creation with the series Call Me Dad. He not only starred in it but also helped develop the idea alongside his friend Magnus Haugaard. It is a dramatic comedy that explores the limits of friendship when one of them starts dating the other's sister.

In 2024, he joined the cast of the fourth season of Those Who Kill. His working method avoids eccentricities and prefers silence before the takes. He still lives in Copenhagen and rejects the idea of moving permanently to Los Angeles because of the aesthetic pressure of California.

Andersen regularly works with the Danish Red Cross. He doesn't do it for public image; he does it to fund youth projects for at-risk young people. In 2025, he plans to begin shooting a European feature film centered on the climate crisis, with a budget of eight million euros.
