Marco Ilsø grew up kicking a ball in the youth ranks of F.C. Copenhagen. His future seemed tied to professional soccer, just like his brother Ken Ilsø's. But in 2008, a casting call for the youth series Mikkel og guldkortet changed his priorities overnight.
Soccer lost a midfielder, and Danish cinema gained a face with hard, angular features.
Ilsø didn't have a conventional academic background in drama schools. He learned on the set of local productions such as Rebounce in 2011. He played a young man in a hostile environment, and it worked because his naturalness was almost raw.
In 2014, he took part in Fasandræberne. He was a key part of this Nordic thriller that broke box office records in Denmark. He played the young version of Ditlev Pram, and that role put him firmly on the radar of international casting directors.
The call that changed his career came in 2016 for the fourth season of Vikings. Marco Ilsø stepped into the role of Hvitserk. It was not an easy character to play, since he went from a warrior living in the shadow of his brothers to a man broken by addiction.
He shot more than fifty episodes of the History Channel series.
During the production years in Ireland, he learned to handle axes and ride horses with skill. But the most complex part was the character's physical transformation toward the end of the series in 2020. Hvitserk ended up becoming Athelstan after his Christian baptism, in one of the most talked-about scenes of the final season.
And the bet on gritty realism paid off.
After the Nordic saga ended, he looked for projects that moved away from swords and furs. In 2021, he took part in the black comedy Wildmen. The shoot took place in the mountains of Norway under extreme weather conditions that forced them to cut daily filming hours.
In 2024, he starred in the series Bullshit, based on a true story. The plot is set in 1980s Copenhagen during a biker gang war. He plays Makrel, the leader of one of these factions. The production required special training to handle high-displacement motorcycles of the era, with no stunt doubles in the urban scenes.
Filming for Bullshit took place across industrial locations in Denmark and Estonia. The series had a production budget of more than ten million euros.
