Alex Lawther never attended drama school. His real training took place on the stage of the Chichester Festival Theatre when he was barely sixteen. There he played a student in the play South Downs in 2011. That lack of academic habits allowed him to build a style based on silence and evasive glances.
In 2014, he played a young Alan Turing in The Imitation Game. It was his first real contact with the global industry. The film earned more than $230 million worldwide and won him the British Young Performer of the Year award from the London Film Critics' Circle.
The British press began comparing him to Ben Whishaw.
But Lawther avoided the obvious paths of commercial period cinema. He preferred to shoot Departure in 2015, exploring sexual identity in southern France. It's a small film with minimal dialogue, because the actor trusts what happens between the lines of the script more than the words spoken aloud.
His mainstream breakout didn't come from academic cinema but from a computer screen. In 2016, he starred in the episode Shut Up and Dance of the series Black Mirror. That digital extortion plot demanded a level of physical tension that few actors his age could sustain without slipping into histrionics. And the gamble paid off.
Soon after came The End of the F***ing World.
The series premiered in 2017, and his performance as James defined an aesthetic of apathy that struck a deep chord with young audiences. He shot two seasons of this British production before the project was definitively canceled in 2019. So Lawther turned to darker genre films.
He appeared in the horror film Ghost Stories in 2017. There he shared the screen with Martin Freeman and proved that his slight frame was perfect for conveying an almost unbearable vulnerability. During those years he balanced film with theater in London's West End.
In 2018, he played an eccentric young man in Old Boys.
In 2021, he worked under Ridley Scott in The Last Duel. His role as King Charles VI was brief but full of an almost childlike eccentricity. That shoot in France marked a major jump in technical scale in his career, given the size of the sets and the budget involved.
He also joined the Star Wars universe in 2022. He played Karis Nemik in the series Andor. His character wrote a rebel manifesto that became a key piece of the show's political storyline. But Lawther never got stuck in space franchises.
By 2024, the actor had joined the cast of the series Alien, directed by Noah Hawley. Shooting this production in Thailand required motion capture technology and large-scale practical effects. Lawther keeps his residence in Paris to get away from the media noise of London or Los Angeles.
He has no social media, and his name doesn't appear in the usual fashion magazine celebrity lists. In 2023, he directed his first short film, titled For People in Trouble. The film was funded through independent money and UK film creation grants.
