Alyssa Sutherland won the Bonne Bell magazine model contest in 1997. She was fifteen and had a height that intimidated the photographers of Brisbane. That event in Australia opened the doors to runways in New York and Paris before she came of age. She worked for brands such as Chanel and Hugo Boss, but her real goal was always on film sets.
That contract changed her passport.
In 2006, she landed a tiny role in The Devil Wears Prada. She appeared for only a few seconds as one of the assistants in the fashion department. It was a low-key debut that helped pay the bills while she studied acting in Manhattan. But the advertising industry kept asking for her face for luxury perfume and cosmetics campaigns.
In 2013, she joined the cast of Vikings to play Queen Aslaug. Her arrival on the History Channel series sparked a visceral backlash among fans of the show because her character breaks the lead's marriage. Sutherland held her ground against Michael Hirst's scripts over four seasons. And she did so with a coolness that ultimately defined her on-screen style.
The actress avoided the stock villain traits and built a woman trapped by a prophecy. Because in period films, silences often say more than screams. In 2017, she starred in the television adaptation of The Mist, based on the story by Stephen King. The series failed to win over critics and was canceled after only ten episodes aired on Spike.
Horror gave her the respect that fashion had denied her.
In 2023, she starred in Evil Dead Rise under the direction of Lee Cronin. Filming in New Zealand required her to spend hours under prosthetic makeup and fake blood. Critics praised her ability to convey the physical weight of a demonic possession without slipping into parody. It was an exhausting job that required precise coordination with the special effects specialists.
Production on this movie used up 6,500 liters of fake blood during the months of filming. Sutherland had to learn to move slowly under the weight of the silicone prosthetics. The film's box office success helped get her name on casting lists for bigger-budget projects in Los Angeles.
In 2025, her participation in the feature film The Second Child was confirmed. Principal photography was scheduled with a production budget of 22 million dollars. Filming took place in various rural areas of Australia to take advantage of the local government's tax incentives.
