Amandla Stenberg was twelve years old when the massive hate of the internet first came knocking. In 2012, she played Rue in The Hunger Games, and it sparked a wave of racist comments because part of the audience could not accept that a literary character described with dark skin was, in fact, a Black girl. That baptism by fire defined her relationship with the industry and with her public image.
And she didn't back down.
After the young adult dystopia craze, she looked for projects with a more overt political edge. In 2018 she starred in Dear White People, a film that grossed 34 million dollars on a modest budget. The film sparked debate about police violence in the United States, and it also showed that Stenberg could carry an adult drama without the backing of a multimillion-dollar franchise.
She appeared in The Darkest Minds that same year. It was a commercial flop that barely covered production and international distribution costs.
But her real interest lay in genre cinema with a sharper edge. In 2022, she shot Bodies Bodies Bodies under the A24 banner. Critics praised her ability to embody a generation obsessed with digital validation and mental health terms used as weapons. It was a satire that moved her definitively away from the label of teen child star.
Her entry into the Star Wars universe with the series The Acolyte in 2024 was a major technical challenge. She had to play twin sisters, Osha and Mae, which meant shooting every scene twice with millimeter-precise motion marks so the physical interaction between the two characters would look real. Filming required months of intense martial arts training before shooting in the United Kingdom.
There was constant media buzz from the very first announcement of the cast.
Disney announced the cancellation of the series in August 2024 after airing just one season. Viewership dropped by 50% between the premiere and the final episode, according to data from the research firm Nielsen. Stenberg responded to the criticism with a self-produced music video in which she denounced the systematic harassment she had received from reactionary sectors of the fandom for more than two years.
So her career is defined by that constant friction between big-budget spectacle and personal activism. In 2023, she voiced Spider-Byte in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, a production that earned 690 million dollars at the global box office. The Acolyte had an estimated budget of 180 million dollars.
