Greta Lee

The Butcher Shop in Los Angeles

Greta Lee was born in 1983 in Los Angeles. Her parents were Korean immigrants who ran a butcher shop, and she grew up in a home where acting was not part of the family plans. She studied communications and theater at Northwestern University, then moved to New York to try to work on Broadway stages.

She spent years working in experimental theater and supporting roles on television.

In 2012, she appeared on the series Girls from Lena Dunham. It was a small role, but it got casting directors to notice her gift for dry comedy. Collaborations on Inside Amy Schumer and High Maintenance followed. Lee specialized in supporting characters who steal scenes with just a few lines of dialogue.

The Comic Relief Trap

Many actors get stuck playing the funny sidekick. Lee came close to that fate after the premiere of Russian Doll in 2019. Her character, Maxine, went viral for the way she delivered a welcome line. That moment brought her global visibility but also typecast her in a frantic, urban style of energy.

Then Celine Song's script arrived.

In 2023, she starred in Past Lives as Nora. It was a change of pace that forced the industry to see her in a new light. The film grossed more than $40 million worldwide and earned her a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama. For this production, she had to act in both Korean and English to convey a melancholy that had nothing to do with her earlier work.

The Leap to Major Productions

Hollywood's view of her changed after her success on the independent circuit. In 2021, she joined the cast of The Morning Show to bring Stella Bak to life, the youngest news chief at the fictional network UBA. Her per-episode salary rose considerably while she balanced filming with her voice work in Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse in 2023.

But the real technical challenge came later.

In 2024, Greta Lee signed on to join the cast of TRON: Ares, the third installment of Disney's science fiction franchise. Filming in Vancouver required months of physical training and suits with motion sensors. The studio set the release date for October 10, 2025.
