Amber Riley was 17 years old when American Idol producers told her she wasn't right for the show. It happened in 2003. That slammed door could have buried her career before it started, but reality turned out very differently.
Six years after that audition setback, Riley landed the role of Mercedes Jones on Glee. The Fox series became a mass phenomenon between 2009 and 2015.
She wasn't the outright lead in the scripts. But her vocal ability forced producers to give her musical numbers of a technical caliber that other cast members couldn't reach.
In 2011, she received her first SAG Award nomination.
After the series ended, many expected Riley to settle for supporting roles in sitcoms. But she decided to move to London in 2016 to star in the West End premiere of Dreamgirls.
Playing Effie White meant tackling one of the most demanding scores in musical theater. The pressure was enormous.
London showed her voice no mercy.
British critics were won over by her performance of the song And I Am Telling You I’m Not Going. That physical and vocal effort earned her the Olivier Award for Best Actress in a Musical in 2017.
It was the first major sign of her potential beyond television.
In 2019, she took part in the production of The Little Mermaid Live!, playing Triton's daughter. The recording took place on a circular set with live projection technology for the ABC network.
Riley has always known how to use competition formats to remind the industry of her staying power. In 2013 she won season 17 of Dancing with the Stars despite having no prior ballroom dance training.
And the strategy worked again years later.
In 2022, she competed in the eighth season of The Masked Singer disguised as a harp. She won the competition by defeating artists with decades of chart experience in the final.
Her career has avoided long-term film contracts in favor of high-impact television projects. In 2022, she starred in the TV movie Single Black Female, which drew more than eight million viewers at its original premiere.
The actress founded her own clothing brand, Riley Land, in 2021, focused on the plus-size market.
In 2024, she headlined the cast of the thriller The Black Girl’s Guide to Death, produced by the Lifetime network. Filming was completed in under four weeks at various locations in Georgia.
