Angeline Ball

The Roar of Dublin

Alan Parker wasn't looking for polished actresses but for voices that could tear through the air. Angeline Ball appeared in 1991 to play Imelda Quirke in The Commitments, and suddenly her face was on posters all over the world. She was only nineteen years old.

That cult film worked as a strange launching pad. While her co-stars struggled to handle sudden fame, she stayed close to the roots of the craft. She did not want to be a one-summer star.

She sang soul as if she had been born in Memphis.

The music industry tried to cash in on that success right away. It released the album Broken Hearted in 1992, but the aggressive marketing from the major labels clashed with her artistic vision. So she chose to prioritize acting over concert stages.

The Weight of Irish Reality

In 1998, she worked under John Boorman in The General. There she played Tina, the wife of criminal Martin Cahill, in black and white that stripped away any artifice. It was a performance of complete restraint that drew attention on the European circuit.

Her career, however, was not limited to art-house cinema. She appeared in major British series such as EastEnders or Shameless during the 2000s. Her ability to inhabit working-class characters allowed her to work steadily without interruption.

And the phone never stopped ringing.

In 2017 she joined the cast of Keeping Faith. The Welsh production demanded a very specific dramatic tone that Ball handled with technical precision. For her, the script always comes before the actor's ego.

European Research and Budget Projects

The project Hidden Assets in 2021 was a major international co-production. She played Detective Emer Berry, a character who steps away from the clichés of the tormented female cop. The series drew massive viewership on RTÉ and was exported to several international markets.

In 2023 she took part in The Gone, a drama shot between Ireland and New Zealand. Filming these transoceanic productions often meant 14-hour days and complicated transport logistics.

She accepted the role because of the strength of the script.

Production on the second season of Hidden Assets in 2023 had a budget of several million euros for visual effects and locations in Antwerp. The shooting contract included an absolute confidentiality clause covering the ending of the crime storyline.
