Anne Consigny joined the Comédie-Française at eighteen. She was the youngest member of the institution at the time. But the rigidity of the French national theater did not match her need for fresh air.
In the 1980s, she decided that cinema could wait. She stepped away from the spotlight to study law and raise her children for nearly two decades.
It was not a strategic retreat.
In 2002, she returned with La Repentie. Her face, marked by a restraint the camera loves, began to draw the attention of directors looking for contained fragility. Because Consigny doesn't need to scream for the viewer to feel her anguish.
Julian Schnabel cast her in Le Scaphandre et le Papillon in 2007. She played the speech therapist who helps the paralyzed protagonist. It was the project that put her on the international radar without the need for grand gestures.
Arnaud Desplechin is the director who has best understood her ability to play upper-middle-class women with inner cracks. In 2008, they filmed Un conte de Noël. There, she shared the frame with Catherine Deneuve and proved that her silence carries as much weight as everyone else's dialogue.
The French film industry nominated her for the César seven times.
In 2009, she starred in Les Herbes folles under the direction of Alain Resnais. The veteran filmmaker trusted her to share the screen with André Dussollier in a story about desire and chance. The bet paid off because her restraint balanced the surrealism of the plot.
In 2016, she appeared in Elle with Paul Verhoeven. Her role as a betrayed but pragmatic woman earned her another nomination for the French Academy award. In 2018, she worked again under Julian Schnabel in the film At Eternity’s Gate.
And in 2024, she joined the cast of the series The New Look as Madame Zehnacker. The show explores the French fashion industry under Nazi occupation and the rise of Christian Dior.
Consigny is an actress known for her invisible method acting.
The series was mostly shot at Paris studios and featured a production design that required a budget of more than fifty million euros.
