Bushwick’s Streets and a Lucky Break

Anthony Ramos was born in 1991 and grew up in the Bushwick housing projects, surrounded by hardship that left little room for mistakes. His life was mapped out around baseball. He wanted to play in college and build a future on the diamond, but his grades weren’t good enough for the athletic scholarships he needed.

A high school teacher pushed him to audition for a theater production to keep him out of trouble in the afternoons. That day changed his career path. Ramos earned a full scholarship to the American Musical and Dramatic Academy and graduated in 2011 with a clear goal. He wasn’t chasing fame; in his neighborhood, the priority was paying next month’s rent.

In 2012, he started working on regional tours and in smaller productions. Those were years of failed auditions and low-paying jobs. But in 2014, his path crossed with Lin-Manuel Miranda’s in a New York basement as they developed a musical about the Founding Fathers.

The gamble paid off.

He played John Laurens and Philip Hamilton in the 2015 premiere of Hamilton. His voice had a distinctive texture, blending New York hip-hop phrasing with impeccable musical theater technique. The show became a cultural phenomenon, earning him a Grammy and his first Emmy nomination for the filmed version of the production.

Taking Over the Block and Taking the Leap

His move into film was neither immediate nor easy. In 2018, he landed a supporting role in A Star Is Born alongside Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper. The camera loved him. He had the natural ease of someone who isn't acting but simply being present in the scene. That was the key to earning the lead role in In the Heights in 2021.

Ramos played Usnavi in a production that cost $55 million. Filming took place on the actual streets of Washington Heights, giving it an authenticity audiences appreciated. But the movie didn’t perform at the box office as expected because of pandemic-related delays and its simultaneous release on streaming platforms.

The industry was watching him closely.

Ramos decided to diversify his profile. In 2019, he released his debut studio album, The Good & The Bad, and in 2021, he released Love and Lies. He didn’t want to be typecast as just a musical theater kid, so he pursued roles in TV dramas, including HBO’s In Treatment, where he played an anxious patient in 2021.

Because the actor knew that surviving in Hollywood takes patience.

The Business of Blockbuster Franchises

In 2023, he got the chance to lead a big-budget action movie with Transformers: Rise of the Beasts. Filming took him to the jungles of Peru and the streets of New York, where he faced the exhausting technical challenge of working in front of green screens. The film grossed more than $430 million worldwide, proving he could carry a major commercial franchise.

His ties to the major studios grew stronger after he joined the Marvel universe. In 2022, he was announced as part of the cast of Ironheart, playing Parker Robbins. The role required a physical transformation and an approach to villainy he had never explored during his theater career.

In 2024, he appeared in Twisters alongside Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones. Filming in Oklahoma was repeatedly interrupted by real tornado alerts, forcing production to shut down for weeks. The film’s final budget was estimated at $200 million after state tax incentives for shooting in rural areas were factored in.
