The Stigma of the Supporting Actor

Leslie Odom Jr. hit Broadway at just seventeen years old. He was part of the cast of Rent and thought his career would be a straight line upward. But the entertainment business doesn't run on math. For nearly a decade, the actor built up forgettable roles in TV procedurals such as CSI: Miami or Grey’s Anatomy.

The industry quickly typecast him in supporting roles where his presence was purely functional. In 2012, he appeared in the series Smash playing a backup singer who barely had room to shine. It was a period of creative frustration that nearly pushed him to give up acting for good.

And the phone stopped ringing.

Everything changed when he agreed to join a reading workshop for a hip hop musical about the life of a Founding Father of the United States. In 2015, the premiere of Hamilton at the Public Theater in New York blew away any commercial expectations. Odom Jr. played Aaron Burr with a restraint that contrasted with the explosive energy of the rest of the cast.

In 2016, he won the Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical, beating his own boss in the voting. That award marked the end of his anonymity. Critics noted that his performance as Burr didn't go for easy sympathy but instead explored envy and political calculation with flawless, technical coolness.

The Year of the Oscar Heist

After leaving the theater, the actor decided he didn't want to be just a privileged voice on stage. In 2017, he took part in the shoot of Murder on the Orient Express under the direction of Kenneth Branagh. It was his first major studio film production. But the Academy's true recognition would come a few years later with a much more intimate project.

In 2020, he played Sam Cooke in the film One Night in Miami, directed by Regina King. Odom Jr. faced the challenge of imitating one of the most recognizable voices in music history without slipping into caricature. His performance earned him two Oscar nominations at the 2021 ceremony (one for Best Supporting Actor and one for the original song Speak Now).

Few actors earn that kind of double validation in a single night.

That success led to a role in the sequel to Knives Out, titled Glass Onion, in 2022. In this film, he played a scientist caught up in a web of tech-industry interests. The shoot was a complex one in Greece, where he shared the poster with Daniel Craig and Edward Norton. The production had an approximate budget of 40 million dollars, not including the distribution rights Netflix purchased.

The Return to Horror and the Stage

In 2023, he took a turn toward genre cinema with The Exorcist: Believer. He played a desperate father in a direct sequel to the 1973 classic, which aimed to revive a worn-out franchise. The film was met with a cold reception from critics but performed well at the international box office during its first few weeks in theaters.

But the stage remained his creative safe haven. From late 2023 into early 2024, he returned to Broadway to star in the revival of the satire Purlie Victorious. For this work, he received another Tony Award nomination in 2024, confirming that his standing in New York is untouchable.

And the gamble paid off.

His music career has grown alongside his film work. In November 2023, he released the album When a Crooner Dies, which explored far more personal sounds and moved away from the Broadway style. It's a record that steers clear of heavy orchestral arrangements to focus on pure songwriting.

Universal Pictures paid 400 million dollars for the rights to the new The Exorcist trilogy, in which the actor signed an initial multi-film contract.
