Jasmine Cephas Jones

Growing up backstage at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe in Manhattan cures you of any stage fright before you turn ten.

Jasmine Cephas Jones learned the craft at home from singer Kim Lesley and actor Ron Cephas Jones. She trained at Berklee to refine her vocal technique and completed her studies at The Neighborhood Playhouse under the Meisner method. But her real baptism by fire came on a rotating wooden stage when she was barely in her twenties.

Nobody saw that phenomenon coming.

In 2015, Lin-Manuel Miranda cast her in the original cast of Hamilton in the Off-Broadway circuit. In the libretto, she took on a double acting feat, playing the innocent Peggy Schuyler in the first act and the scorned Maria Reynolds in the second. The show made an immediate leap to Broadway, and in 2016, at just twenty-six, Cephas Jones won a Grammy Award for Best Musical Theater Album.

From Score to Screen

Leaving a sold-out Broadway musical with months of work ahead meant taking a leap into the unknown. Many performers trained on Broadway get typecast in the genre, but she chose to pursue roles with edge in the independent circuit.

In 2015, she had a minor role in Mistress America under director Noah Baumbach. Three years later, the opportunity that redefined her career arrived when Carlos López Estrada cast her in Blindspotting.

In the feature film, she played Ashley Rose, a mother confronting police violence and gentrification in Oakland. Her restraint and command of dramatic timing earned unanimous praise after the Sundance screening. So when the project grew into a television series, the creators gave her the full weight of the storytelling.

In 2021, the TV series Blindspotting premiered on Starz with Cephas Jones credited as executive producer on twenty-two episodes.

That role meant delivering free-verse monologues on camera while managing shooting schedules and daily budgets. Running a series from the inside demands a level of focus very different from the stage.

And the risk paid off.

Awards, Losses and Technical Rigor

In 2020, the actress reached a professional milestone by winning the Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Short Form Drama for #FreeRayshawn. That same night, her father took home another statuette for his work on This Is Us, the first time a father and daughter won Emmys in the same year.

That coincidence closed an unrepeatable chapter just before Ron's death from a lung disease in August 2023.

That same year, Cephas Jones appeared in Origin under Ava DuVernay's direction, adapting Isabel Wilkerson's essay alongside Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor. To prepare, the actress spent three weeks analyzing 1930s sound recordings in the Atlanta archives. Filming of her scenes wrapped after four days in Berlin.

In 2026, she signed her contract to play Swan in the musical adaptation of Warriors at the Lunt-Fontanne Theatre on Broadway, committing to a union schedule of eight weekly performances under the Actors' Equity Association.
