Arliss Howard is not a cover star or a headline maker in the gossip press. He was born in Missouri in 1954 and honed his craft on the stage before the film industry noticed his angular face. His first big breakthrough came in 1987 when Stanley Kubrick cast him as the cowboy Cowboy in Full Metal Jacket.

That shoot in London lasted almost two years because of the director's obsessions. Howard endured Kubrick's pressure and made his character the only moral support of the platoon in the second half of the film. The actor recalls that there was no room for ego on set, because everyone was a part of a much bigger machine.

That was his real baptism by fire.

In the nineties, his name kept popping up in the credits of productions looking for a supporting actor with dramatic weight. He worked with Oliver Stone on Natural Born Killers in 1994, playing a rather shady guardian angel. But his big commercial break came in 1997 with The Lost World: Jurassic Park.

Steven Spielberg gave him the role of Peter Ludlow, the corporate villain who ends up devoured by a baby T-rex in a San Diego warehouse. That project gave him the financial security he needed to step away from the major studios for a while. In 1996, he married actress Debra Winger, and the two of them decided their professional paths would go in other directions.

That check from Universal Pictures let him choose his next steps more carefully.

The director's chair and the creative refuge

His move into feature film directing happened in 2001 with Big Bad Love. He wrote the screenplay himself, based on stories by Larry Brown, and reserved the lead role for his wife. Critics were divided, but many praised his ability to capture the sticky atmosphere of the American South.

Howard returned to directing with the TV movie Dawn Anna in 2005. At this stage of his life, he preferred small projects and collaborations with friends over big-budget action blockbusters. But he never gave up acting and appeared in TV series such as True Blood or Medium for several episodes.

He prefers silence to the noise of the red carpet.

In 2020, David Fincher called him to play Louis B. Mayer in Mank. Howard studied real recordings of the MGM mogul to nail the authoritarian tone that Jack Fincher's script demanded. His performance was key to understanding the power dynamics of 1930s Hollywood.

The luxury supporting actor in the streaming era

In 2023, he reunited with Fincher on The Killer. He plays The Client, a powerful man who sets off the protagonist's revenge plot after a failed assassination in Paris. The film was made on an estimated budget of $65 million and went straight to a digital platform with barely any theatrical release.

Howard appears in only a few scenes, but his presence drives the tension of the film's entire third act. In late 2023, he took part in the production of Manhunt, a series about the manhunt for John Wilkes Booth after the assassination of Abraham Lincoln. In this project, he plays Edwin Stanton (the Secretary of War) with a restraint that recalls his best years on stage.

The actor keeps his residence in New York, far from the spotlight of Los Angeles, and continues to take on roles based on the quality of the script. His representative's office confirms that he remains attached to independent theater projects on the East Coast.
