Austin Abrams was born in Sarasota, Florida, in 1996 and grew up far from the entertainment industry. His parents are doctors, and nothing in his family tree pointed toward acting. He began performing in local theaters as a child, but it was in 2011 that he landed his first professional role in the film Ticking Clock.
It wasn't an explosive start. For years, he juggled high school with constant trips to audition, which didn't always lead to a contract.
Persistence won the day.
In 2015, he appeared in Paper Towns, the film adaptation of John Green's novel. Playing Ben Starling allowed him to show a comedic side he had not yet explored on screen. Young audiences connected with his naturalness. But the real challenge came that same year when he joined the cast of The Walking Dead.
His role as Ron Anderson proved difficult to handle. Abrams played a traumatized, violent teenager who ended up clashing with the series' leads. In 2016, his character died on the show, but the impact on his career was already irreversible. That job gave him visibility with casting directors at the major cable networks.
In 2017, he shot Tragedy Girls and Brad’s Status. In the latter, he shared the screen with Ben Stiller, playing his son on a college trip. The script demanded an emotional restraint that would become his trademark in the years that followed.
In 2019, he entered the HBO universe with Euphoria. His performance as Ethan Lewis stands out as the calm counterpoint in a visually frantic narrative. While other characters struggled with extreme addictions, he built an arc based on sensitivity and patience.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2020, he starred in Dash & Lily for Netflix. The series gave him his first lead role in a big-budget production. Filming took place at various locations across New York during the winter months. The chemistry with his co-star was the driving force behind a story that avoided the most worn-out clichés of the teen romance genre.
Abrams has chosen not to open social media accounts despite constant pressure from his agents. He prefers to let his work speak for him and guards his private life with a professional discretion that is unusual among actors of his generation. In 2022, he played Max in Do Revenge, where he proved he could embody a manipulative villain behind a harmless facade.
In 2024, he shot Wolfs alongside Brad Pitt and George Clooney, directed by Jon Watts. He plays a young man caught up in a criminal mess over the course of a single night in New York. The role demanded strong improvisation skills and physical stamina for the action scenes shot outdoors at night.
The level of demand was total.
The production of Wolfs had an estimated budget of $200 million. In 2024, the film premiered at the Venice Film Festival and received positive reviews for the dynamic among its three leads. The distribution deal for this project prioritized a limited theatrical release before its eventual arrival on digital platforms.
For the project The Line, shot earlier but with a commercial release in 2025, Abrams shares the cast with Alex Wolff. The film explores the darkest college dynamics and the hierarchies of fraternities. Filming was completed in less than six weeks at various locations in the state of Mississippi.
