Bill Maher lost his job at ABC in 2002 for saying what he thought about the September 11 attacks.

His dry remark about the alleged cowardice of the terrorists, compared with firing missiles from the sea, got him in trouble. Pressure from advertisers forced the cancellation of Politically Incorrect after nine years on the air. That cancellation marked a change in the rules of American cable television.

Commercial television had closed its doors on him for good.

But Maher didn't fade away. In 2003 he moved to HBO to launch Real Time with Bill Maher and discovered that total creative freedom came with more fragmented audiences. And it turned out to be profitable.

The Comedian Who Didn't Want to Act

His start in comedy goes back to 1979 at the Catch a Rising Star club in New York. There he learned that politics got more laughs than jokes about everyday life. Maher was never a method actor or a typical variety comedian.

He worked as a supporting actor in low-budget films such as D.C. Cab in 1983 and Ratboy in 1986. These were minor roles that barely covered his Manhattan bills. His true calling was political monologue delivered standing before a hostile audience.

Nobody on American television dared to go that far.

In 1993 he launched a format that mixed porn stars with Republican senators at the same table. The experiment ran under the title Politically Incorrect and transformed the way debates happened on the small screen. But Maher's cynical tone always caused friction with network television executives.

The Business of Skepticism

In 2008 he took his atheism to the big screen with the documentary Religulous. The film cost about $3.5 million to make and grossed more than $13 million in the United States alone. It questioned the foundations of monotheistic religions without apologizing to believers.

Director Larry Charles helped build an interview format in which Maher always had the last word. But the film also drew criticism for its aggressive editing. So the comedian returned to HBO to focus on his weekly analysis show.

And the gamble paid off.

Maher has avoided fictional scripts for decades to focus on the immediacy of social commentary. In 2014 he starred in the comedy special Bill Maher: Live from D.C., where he analyzed the country's ideological divide. His style is built on blunt phrasing and head-on attacks on both sides of the political spectrum.

New Formats and a Podcast Refuge

With the explosion of on-demand content, Maher launched Club Random in 2022. It is a space for long conversations recorded in his own private bar, with no edits. There, he smokes marijuana with his guests while criticizing what he sees as the authoritarian drift of modern culture.

In 2024 he published the book What This Comedian Said, which collects his most controversial commentaries from the past decade. The book quickly reached the top spots on the nonfiction bestseller lists. But his priority remains live performance and an unfiltered connection with paying subscribers.

The structure of his HBO show has remained almost unchanged since its original premiere. It includes an opening monologue, a debate panel and the closing segment titled New Rules. In 2024 the network renewed its contract to keep the show on the air through 2026.
