Beau Starr has the kind of face viewers recognize before the first act is over. He was born in Queens back in 1944, and the asphalt of New York shaped his acting style. His imposing build and a voice that doesn't take jokes opened the doors to genre films and crime dramas.
His brother Mike Starr also worked in this field. The two shared that presence of tough guys who could be your best friend or your worst nightmare in an alley. But Beau found his own niche in police precinct offices and sheriff's badges.
In 1988, he landed the role that would earn him a place at horror conventions for decades. He played Sheriff Ben Meeker in Halloween 4: The Return of Michael Myers. He reprised the character in 1989 for the fifth installment of the franchise. He accepted the role without knowing that B-movie horror would bring him a bigger popularity payoff than his prestige dramas.
The truth is, Beau never sought the spotlight.
He worked under Martin Scorsese in 1990 on the film GoodFellas. He needed only a few minutes on screen for the audience to understand who was in charge of the scene. That ability to fill the frame without saying an extra word helped him land one project after another throughout the nineties.
In 1994, he stepped into the shoes of a detective on the series Due South. He appeared in 35 episodes through 1999, playing Mike Rivers. It was a period of financial stability and recognition in Canadian and American television. Still, film kept calling him for authority figures or fathers with secrets.
Hollywood called on him whenever it needed someone who didn't look like a method actor.
He appeared in Born on the Fourth of July in 1989 and later in The Santa Clause in 1994. His range let him move from war drama to family comedy without anyone questioning his authenticity. His filmography exceeds 150 credits across film and television.
Unlike other peers of his generation who retired at the turn of the century, he kept up the pace. In 2011, he appeared in the series The Listener, and in 2013 he filmed The Resurrection of Tony Gitone. He never stopped working because he saw the craft as a nine-to-five job.
Because for him, acting was always a matter of craft.
In 2023, he joined the cast of The Last Ritual, directed by Nicholas Humphries. A year later, in 2024, he came on board the project The Order. He still lives in California and keeps his home away from the Hollywood spotlight. The most recent production he worked on closed its budget at $12 million.
