Brad Johnson didn't seek fame at the acting schools of Los Angeles. His entry into the industry was the result of a lucky break that took him from the rodeo to in front of the still cameras. Before Steven Spielberg cast him in Always in 1989, Johnson made a living on the professional rodeo circuit and as the face of a well-known cigarette brand.
That past as a cowboy and model gave him a physical presence that Hollywood snapped up immediately. On Spielberg's set he shared scenes with Richard Dreyfuss and Holly Hunter, playing Ted Baker. It was a dream debut that seemed to foreshadow a future at the top of the action star ranks. But the industry is often fickle with faces that seem too perfect.
And the phone stopped ringing for the big studio productions.
In 1991, he starred in The Hunt for the Intruder under John Milius's direction. It was his big break to lead a war blockbuster. The film cost $35 million and barely reached $such14 million at the US box office.
Television was where he found the stability that film denied him after his dazzling start. Between 1992 and 1993, he played Dominick O'Malley on the series Melrose Place. His role was that of a photographer who brought a touch of maturity to a cast dominated by young drama and apartment-building conflicts.
He kept working thanks to traditional, heroic characters.
He appeared in the Left Behind series starting in 2000, playing pilot Rayford Steele. These films targeted a very specific market tied to Christian audiences in the United States. Johnson soon realized his profile fit these niches better than red carpet events. So he took on his genre actor role without much complaint.
Because his true passion was never in scripts but in the land. For years he juggled roles on series like CSI with running his own ranch. For Johnson, acting was a job that allowed him to fund his lifestyle in the countryside.
As the 2000s went on, the actor stepped away from the spotlight to focus on his personal business ventures. He moved to Texas with his family and started a company selling luxury estates and rural land. His real life ended up looking a lot like the Zane Grey novels he loved so much.
He never missed the noise of the Hollywood Hills.
But tragedy struck unexpectedly, far from the film cameras. Brad Johnson died on February 18, 2022 in Fort Worth from complications related to COVID-19. He was 62 years old at the time of his death. The news did not become public until June of that same year, when his representative confirmed the death in a technical statement.
The family managed his legacy through the company Johnson Land and Home in Texas.
