Dina Meyer

Leaping from Queens

Dina Meyer was born in Forest Hills in 1968. Before stepping onto a film set, she studied business administration at Long Island University. But marketing wasn't her final destination.

In 1993, she landed the role of Lucinda Nicholson in Sensation de vivir. It was a direct ticket into millions of teenagers' living rooms. Meyer wanted something more physical and less sugary than the California high school dramas.

And the gamble paid off.

Axes, Robots and Space Bugs

Robert Longo cast her in Johnny Mnemonic in 1995. She shared the screen with Keanu Reeves in a cyberpunk future that critics of the time didn't understand. But time has turned the movie into a cult classic.

Then came Dragonheart in 1996. She played Kara. Her physical presence was real, since she did much of her own action work. Paul Verhoeven saw that energy in her for Starship Troopers in 1997.

Dizzy Flores wasn't the lead in the original script. But Meyer turned her into the heart of the story. Her on-screen death remains one of the most talked-about moments in 1990s science fiction.

Surviving in the Genre

In 2004, she took a supporting role in a low-budget horror movie. It was called Saw. Nobody expected that the role of Detective Allison Kerry would last four installments in a row.

That franchise changed the rules of commercial horror. Meyer brought a necessary sobriety amid so many deadly traps. She worked on Saw II in 2005 and returned for Saw III during 2006.

Commercial cinema sometimes forgets its action heroines.

Television has been her constant refuge. In 2002, she played Barbara Gordon in Birds of Prey. In 2023, she returned to the same character for the series The Flash after more than two decades away.

Meyer has over ninety professional credits on her industry profile. In 2017 she voiced Dizzy in the animated feature Starship Troopers: Traitor of Mars, coming full circle with the character. Filming for her latest TV appearances in 2024 took place in Vancouver under strict confidentiality protocols.
