Brett Dalton was born in California in 1983, but his real training took place on the East Coast. Before stepping onto a television set, he attended the Yale School of Drama to refine a technique that seemed destined for the Broadway stage. In 2010 he earned his Master of Fine Arts after years of intensive study of the classics.
His first steps in the industry were low-key. He took part in a television pilot that never aired and made brief appearances in series such as Blue Bloods and Army Wives. Financial insecurity defined those early years, when the actor juggled auditions with small-time commercial jobs.
It wasn't all Marvel.
But in 2012, the call came that changed his career. Joss Whedon was looking for fresh faces to expand Marvel's cinematic universe on the small screen. Dalton landed the role of Agent Grant Ward and moved to Los Angeles to start a shoot that would last several years.
In 2013, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. premiered, and audiences welcomed Dalton as a conventional action hero. The writers had other plans for him. Midway through the first season, it was revealed that his character was a Hydra mole, and that betrayal saved his spot on the series.
And it worked.
He played Ward and his alien version, Hive, until 2017. During that time, the actor had to deal with fan hatred on social media because his character had killed several beloved leads. But Dalton enjoyed that dark chapter and took the opportunity to explore roles far less charming than the traditional leading man.
In 2015, Dalton's face went digital. He lent his image and voice to the horror video game Until Dawn, where he played Mike Munroe. The game sold more than four million copies and definitively opened the doors of the interactive entertainment industry to him.
After leaving the superhero universe, he sought smaller projects. In 2017, he starred in the faith-based film The Resurrection of Gavin Stone. Critics weren't especially generous to the movie, but Dalton's performance received positive comments for his comedic timing.
Long-running television remained his natural habitat. In 2021, he joined the cast of Chicago Fire to play Lieutenant Jason Pelham during the show's tenth season. It was a temporary character meant to fill an important story gap at the NBC firehouse.
In 2022, he returned to video games with God of War Ragnarök, voicing Freyr. It was a complex motion-capture job that required months of studio sessions. Since then, his career has alternated between conventional sets and high-budget recording booths.
In 2023, he joined the main cast of the series Found as Detective Mark Trent. The first season was filmed entirely in Atlanta, with a budget managed by the NBC network.
