Brett Goldstein never asked permission to become a star. In 2019, he worked as a writer in the writers' room of Ted Lasso, where his job was to shape the dialogue of a grumpy, veteran soccer player. But midway through the process, he decided that no one would understand that character better than himself.
He sent in a tape he recorded on his own at eleven at night. He didn't tell his bosses or seek the producers' approval before hitting send.
It was a total gamble that changed his bank account.
Before the awards and global fame, he spent a stretch in Marbella. His father bought a strip club on the Malaga coast during a midlife crisis and brought Brett along. There he spent months running the venue and dealing with absurd situations that ended up fueling his raw comedy style.
That stint in Spain during the early 2000s taught him that show business has a far less glamorous B-side.
He studied Film and Feminism at the University of Warwick. That academic combination sounds like a joke from his stand-up sets, but it explains why his male characters avoid tough-guy stereotypes with no feelings. In 2016, he wrote and starred in SuperBob, a low-budget superhero film that went largely unnoticed by the general public.
Failure is a silent teacher.
That setback didn't stop his drive to produce his own material. In 2018, he launched the podcast Films To Be Buried With, where he interviews guests about their lives through the movies that shaped them. The project helped him build a network of contacts in the British industry that would be vital for his next steps in television.
Between 2021 and 2022, he won two Emmy Awards in a row for Outstanding Supporting Actor. Hollywood stopped seeing him as a niche comic and started treating him as a creator capable of carrying high-level productions. So he used the momentum to expand his work as an executive producer.
In 2023, he co-created the series Shrinking with Bill Lawrence and Jason Segel. The show explores grief with a cynical yet kind eye and earned an immediate renewal from Apple TV+. Goldstein writes and oversees the scripts but often prefers to stay behind the cameras to control the tone of the final product.
His entry into the Marvel Cinematic Universe came in 2022. He briefly appeared as Hercules in the post-credits scene of Thor: Love and Thunder, and that cameo of just a few seconds generated thousands of theories on specialized forums.
In 2024, he released All of You, a science fiction romantic drama he co-wrote with William Bridges. The film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and received positive reviews for its mature take on romantic relationships.
At the end of 2024, his exclusive deal with Warner Bros. Television was confirmed, to develop new scripted projects over the next three years.
