Carey Mulligan received rejection letters from three drama schools in London before turning twenty. In one of those auditions, an examiner suggested she look for work as a children's TV presenter. That advice was the industry's first major misjudgment about an actress who has always preferred silence to media exposure.
Mulligan doesn't try to win over the audience.
In 2005 she made her film debut in a supporting role in Pride & Prejudice. But her career took a real turn in 2009 with the release of An Education. Playing Jenny Mellor earned her her first Oscar and BAFTA nomination for best actress. She accepted success with a careful distance that has become her personal trademark.
Because for her, the work is about disappearing. In 2010 she took part in Never Let Me Go and soon after moved to New York to work in theater. There she met professionals who valued technique more than fame. So she decided her path would not go through action blockbusters.
In 2011 she filmed Drive under the direction of Nicolas Winding Refn. Her character had barely any dialogue, but her chemistry with Ryan Gosling carried the tension of the entire film. That same year she worked with Steve McQueen on Shame. In that film she played Sissy and sang a languid version of New York, New York that stunned international critics.
And the gamble paid off.
During this period she specialized in roles that exploited an apparent fragility. In 2013 she starred in The Great Gatsby by Baz Luhrmann and Inside Llewyn Davis by the Coen brothers. In both productions she showed she could carry the weight of big budgets without losing restraint. But in 2015 she pursued smaller projects such as Suffragette.
In 2018 she starred in Lo que niega la luz under the direction of Paul Dano. It was a dry, harsh role about the collapse of a family in the 1960s. The film did not have a big commercial run, but it helped casting directors stop seeing her only as the sweet period-drama girl.
In 2020 she decided to break away from her public image with Promising Young Woman. Under the direction of Emerald Fennell, she played Cassie, a character who used femininity as a weapon of revenge. The role earned her second Academy Award nomination and changed perceptions of her acting range.
In 2022 she filmed She Said, portraying the journalistic investigation into the Harvey Weinstein case. It was a long, technical shoot where historical accuracy took precedence over acting showcase. But her biggest physical challenge came a year later.
In 2023, she worked under Bradley Cooper on Maestro. To play Felicia Montealegre, she spent months studying voice recordings and gestures of the Costa Rican actress. It was a transformation through mimicry that earned her another Oscar nomination in 2024. The aging makeup process for the character took more than five hours a day on set.
During the shoot of Spaceman in 2024, the production had to adjust the filming schedule in Prague for logistical reasons. The film had an estimated budget of 40 million dollars.
