Vancouver rarely hands out golden opportunities without asking for something in return. In 1999, Carly Pope realized her look didn't fit the mold of the perfect California girl. She had a strong jawline and a way of speaking that effortlessly dripped with sarcasm.
She had no interest in being the queen of the prom.
Ryan Murphy cast her to star in Popular in 1999, and the role of Sam McPherson launched her into teen stardom, a fame she never quite embraced. The series ran for two seasons, but its impact on young audiences was massive. Critics of the time noted that Pope brought unusual depth to a script that sometimes bordered on parody.
But success on network television in the late nineties was a gilded cage. Contracts were one-sided and typecasting labels were almost impossible to shake. Pope went from being the face of a generation to fighting for roles that weren't just an extension of her breakout work.
And the industry typecast her.
During the 2000s, she chose to take refuge in Canadian independent film. In 2007 she shot Young People Fucking, a comedy that defied censorship and grossed two hundred thousand dollars in its first weekend in Canada. It was a risky move that aimed to break away from her high school girl image and prove she could carry mature, raw dialogue.
Television came calling again with more dramatically complex projects. In 2009, she joined the seventh season of 24 to play Samantha Roth. She worked alongside Kiefer Sutherland in a frenetic production environment where shooting days often ran more than fourteen hours. That experience gave her the grit she needed to survive high-budget productions.
In 2016, she joined the cast of Suits as Tara Messer. Her character was central to Louis Litt's storyline and allowed her to show a far more sophisticated and restrained style. That same year, she accepted the role of Susan Williams on Arrow and appeared in ten episodes that explored investigative journalism within the superhero universe.
The risk was always there.
Neill Blomkamp trusted her to star in Demonic in 2021. It was an experimental production shot under strict health safety protocols, where Pope carried the film's entire weight. The movie used volumetric capture technology for the first time in a feature-length horror film, and she had to perform in empty spaces surrounded by sensors.
In 2022, she appeared in the movie Easter Sunday, sharing scenes with Jo Koy and Tiffany Haddish. That same year, she joined Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin to play Davie Adams. The series was shot on location in New York and was produced on a budget that ensured a cinematic look for the HBO Max platform.
Her contract for the first season of this project included confidentiality clauses that kept the actress from revealing her character's fate until the day of the premiere.
