Chiaki Kobayashi didn't need a decade of supporting roles for the Japanese industry to notice his voice. In 2021, he received the Best New Actor award at the 15th Seiyuu Awards. That recognition validated a career that had begun taking shape years earlier at the Office Osawa agency.
His voice doesn't chase gratuitous histrionics.
Before landing the big action roles, he worked on projects such as Gundam Build Divers Re:Rise, playing Hiroto Kuga. It was there that he began refining the restrained, almost dry tone that would become his greatest commercial asset.
At 2020, she played Louis James Moriarty in Moriarty the Patriot. The role demanded a mix of elegance and coldness that Kobayashi pulled off with apparent ease. But her real breakthrough in popularity came with Langa Hasegawa in SK8 the Infinity in 2021.
And the gamble paid off.
That character allowed him to explore a vulnerability that had until then been hidden behind the stiffness of his earlier work. The anime industry often typecasts young voices into very narrow archetypes. Kobayashi broke that pattern thanks to an innate ability to handle the silences between lines.
The year 2023 was the actor's busiest period. In April of that year, he took on the role of Gabimaru in Hell’s Paradise: Jigokuraku. The ninja's complexity (an assassin who only wants to return to his wife) required a balance between brutality and tenderness.
At the same time, he voiced Mash Burnedead in Mashle: Magic and Muscles. Here his range shifted toward deadpan comedy. It's hard to make people laugh when the character barely has any vocal modulation. But Kobayashi used a monotone rhythm that fit the satire of the magical world.
In 2024, his name became linked to one of the most profitable global phenomena in the industry. He voiced Sung Jinwoo in the adaptation of Solo Leveling. The project demanded a constant vocal evolution (from the character's initial weakness to his near-omnipotence by the end of the season).
He is not a traditional method actor.
He prefers to read the script a few minutes before entering the booth to keep the freshness of the first take. In 2025, his schedule included the sequels to several big-budget franchises. His contract with Office Osawa remains in effect after almost a decade of professional collaboration.
