Chloe Wang arrived in China at fifteen barely speaking any Mandarin. She was 2007, and her family decided the Asian capital was the ideal place to launch a career as a teen pop star. She recorded singles such as Uh Oh in two languages and learned to work in front of the cameras before knowing what she wanted to do with her professional life.
But the Asian market was not the final destination.
She returned to Los Angeles with an unusual résumé and a bitter reality waiting for her at casting calls. Casting directors didn't know where to place a young woman with her last name. At auditions she was told she wasn't white enough for leading roles or Asian enough for niche supporting parts.
At 2011, she decided to radically change her stage name. She went from Chloe Wang to Chloe Bennet because she needed to pay the rent and Hollywood systematically ignored her. She used her father's first name as her last name to soften her ethnic background in the eyes of the most traditional producers.
The strategy worked almost immediately.
Just days after changing her professional profile, she landed her first major role in the series Nashville in 2012. That technical decision let her into casting rooms that had long been locked to her. And the name Wang disappeared from the credits for good.
In 2013, she signed the contract that defined her career for nearly a decade. She joined Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. to play Skye, a hacker who would eventually become the superheroine Quake. The ABC series ran for seven seasons on air, and she filmed a total of 136 episodes until production wrapped in 2020.
That period demanded constant physical training and a level of media exposure she never fully sought. But it also gave her the financial security she needed to choose her next steps calmly. During those intense years of filming, she also voiced the lead character in the animated film Abominable in 2019.
The transition after her Marvel contract ended was rocky. In 2021, she agreed to star in the live-action version of The Powerpuff Girls for The CW. The pilot episode turned out to be a disaster in the production company's internal screenings, it was ordered to be reshot from scratch, and she ultimately left the project due to scheduling conflicts.
It was a hard blow.
In 2023, she appeared in the series Dave, playing Robyn in several episodes of the third season. That same year, she lent her voice to the animated series Invincible. So she sought projects with greater political and social weight to move away from fast-paced commercial cinema.
In 2024, she joined the cast of Interior Chinatown, a Hulu production based on Charles Yu's novel that dissects the racial stereotypes she herself faced early in her career. Filming for the series ended with an estimated budget of 80 million dollars for its first season.
