Cho Yeo-jeong started out as a teen cover model in 1997. For ten years, her name appeared in TV drama credits without anyone remembering her face the next day. The Korean system is expert at devouring young actresses and forgetting them once they pass twenty-five.
In 2010, she decided she no longer wanted to be the nice supporting actress. She accepted the lead role in The Servant, knowing the industry would scrutinize her over the explicit sex scenes. Many agencies advised their actresses to turn down the script for fear of damaging their public image.
And the gamble paid off.
The film drew more than three million viewers to theaters. Cho proved that her looks were just a wrapper for an acting technique that handled silence with precision. That success gave her the freedom to choose projects that she never had in the offices of Seoul before.
In 2012, she broke the taboo of eroticism again with The Concubine. It was a period drama in which sexual tension and political violence blended in a raw way. During that shoot, she learned to control the nuances of despair without resorting to cheap screams or exaggerated crying.
Bong Joon-ho was cast as Mrs. Park in Parasite in 2019 without a prior audition. The director was looking for a specific fragility for the character of Yeon-kyo, because the filmmaker needed someone who could seem both smart and foolish in a single gesture.
Cho's performance was key to the film's dark humor. Her way of saying "it's very metaphorical" stuck with international audiences. That year she won Best Actress at the Blue Dragon Film Awards and earned recognition from the Screen Actors Guild in Hollywood.
Her Oscar success in 2020 put her on the global map. But she chose to return to daily work in her own country rather than desperately chase contracts abroad. She wasn't after fame beyond her own borders.
And she pulled it off by keeping her usual low profile.
In 2020, she starred in Cheat on Me If You Can. She played a crime novelist who suspects her husband in a plot that blended comedy and thriller. She earned a record fee for an actress of her generation for that TV project, thanks to her status after the Oscar.
In 2021, she continued piling up filming hours on High Class. The plot centered on the lies of the elite at an international school on Jeju Island. Cho Yeo-jeong carried the weight of the series with a restraint that critics praised more than the quality of the original script.
In 2024, she appeared in the series Tarot and the feature film Hidden Face. This latest project reunited her with director Kim Dae-woo for a mystery thriller shot under a strict confidentiality agreement. It is a story in which the suspense is locked inside a secret room of a luxurious house.
The final budget for that production exceeded 7 billion won.
