Choi Hyun-wook left baseball in 2019 due to an elbow injury that cut short a ten-year sports career. That physical setback pushed him to enroll in the acting department at Hanlim Multi Art School. And the change of direction was immediate.
His debut in the web series Real:Time:Love quickly won him visibility among young South Korean audiences. But his real breakthrough into the professional industry came in 2021, when he joined Taxi Driver. In this production, he played a violent school bully, a role that had nothing to do with his previous public image.
And the gamble paid off.
That same year, he filmed Racket Boys for the SBS network. His role as a badminton player allowed him to draw on his past as an athlete, and it earned him the Best New Actor award at the network's awards in 2021. It was a straightforward recognition of his ability to inhabit opposite characters within just a few months of each other.
In 2022, he landed the project that expanded his fan base beyond South Korea. In Twenty-Five Twenty-One, he played Moon Ji-woong, a charismatic teenager who brought comic and emotional relief to a plot full of nostalgia. The series reached audience ratings above 11% in its home country.
But the actor did not want to get stuck in the role of a youthful heartthrob. So that same 2022, he accepted the lead role in Weak Hero Class 1. In this adaptation of a webtoon, he played a student who uses physical strength to protect his friends from systemic violence in the classroom.
It was his most demanding role to date.
Critics praised his body language and his use of dramatic pauses. Because Hyun-wook often works from silence before exploding into choreographed action scenes. In 2023, he kept up this line of intense projects with his appearance in the second season of D.P. for Netflix.
His role in Twinkling Watermelon in 2023 marked a return to bright stories with a musical backdrop. For this project, he had to learn the basics of sign language and guitar. His approach to work is based on specific technical preparation for every role he takes on.
Despite his young age, he has avoided generic romantic comedies in favor of thrillers or dramas with clear social themes. In High Cookie, he explored the psychological thriller genre tied to substance use in school settings. It was a production released digitally that made a notable impact on streaming platforms.
The industry values his commercial appeal.
His appearance in the music video for Ditto by NewJeans in 2022 generated millions of views within hours. But the actor keeps a low profile in public appearances outside the official promotions of his work. In 2024, the agency Goldmedalist renewed his representation contract under exclusive terms to manage his international expansion.
