Go Min-si worked organizing weddings before turning twenty. She had a steady job in Daejeon and a fixed salary, but she decided to give it all up and move to Seoul. She had no connections or prior training at elite acting schools.
In 2016, she directed her own short film titled Parallel Novel because no one was offering her roles. It won the Grand Prize at the Three Minutes Film Festival. That three-minute work was her real calling card in an industry that often overlooks those who don't come from families of artists.
Nobody called her, so she hired herself.
And the gamble paid off. In 2018, she landed a supporting role in the action film The Witch: Part 1. The Subversion. To play Myung-hee, she had to gain weight and learn the dialect of Chungcheong Province.
Her presence on screen balanced the film's extreme violence with dry, everyday humor. Local critics began to notice her ability to hold her own alongside established names. She earned a nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the Grand Bell Awards that same year.
In 2020, she joined the cast of Sweet Home, playing a ballerina who gives up her dreams after an injury. The Netflix production demanded grueling physical training for months. But what really caught attention was her defiant gaze and her low, quiet voice.
Because streaming success doesn't always translate into cinematic respect. Go Min-si chose to alternate big-budget projects with more intimate period dramas. In 2021, she starred in Youth of May, a story set during the Gwangju Uprising of 1980.
The body holds up until the script says enough.
During the filming of Smugglers in 2023, she had to perform underwater action scenes. The movie earned more than $37 million at the South Korean box office. Her performance as Go Ok-bun won her the Best New Actress award at that year's Blue Dragon Film Awards.
So her leap into large-scale commercial cinema happened without losing her identity as a character actress. She wasn't looking to be the pretty face on the poster but the engine of the plot.
In 2024 he filmed the suspense series The Frog under director Mo Wan-il. For this project he lost weight drastically, down to 43 kilos. The goal was to convey an unsettling fragility that contrasted with his character's violence.
Even so, the physical exhaustion didn't slow his production schedule. In 2024 he also premiered the third season of Sweet Home, closing a four-year run tied to the same franchise.
He's set to premiere the romantic drama Your Taste in 2025. In this production he plays a chef who has no interest in food, working at a restaurant in a small provincial town.
Filming Smugglers in 2023 involved three-hour makeup sessions to recreate the Korean aesthetic of the 1970s.
