Son Suk-ku didn't start out on a Seoul set but on patrol in Iraq.
It was 2005, and he decided to volunteer for the Zaytun Division to escape the monotony of his university years. That military experience in Erbil shaped his dry gaze and the lack of artifice he brings to his characters. His entry into the industry came late and was completely outside the usual circuits of Korean acting schools.
But film was never the original plan.
In Chicago, he studied visual arts and film with the aim of making documentaries. He spent years in the United States and Canada practicing boxing and running a heavy machinery distribution company. In fact, before his face was recognized across much of the world, he worked as CEO of a family company with millions in income.
His change of direction came after he turned thirty. In 2017, he landed a supporting role in the second season of Sense8 by the Wachowskis. There he played Detective Mun, and he used his fluent English to catch the international spotlight without going through the traditional grind of TV drama.
And the gamble paid off.
Because his style didn't fit the aesthetic standard of the leading men of his generation. In 2018, he played a despicable villain in Mother, and shortly after showed a more cynical side in Matrimonial Chaos. Son Suk-ku prefers long silences and short sentences. His characters often seem weary of the world, something audiences connected with for its rare honesty.
In 2019, he worked on Designated Survivor: 60 Days. His role as a presidential secretary showed that he could carry dense political dialogue without losing his natural charisma. But his real breakthrough came with a character who barely spoke.
During 2022, his name became everywhere. In the series My Liberation Notes, he played Mr. Gu, a mysterious alcoholic who works at a sink factory in a remote town. Audiences became obsessed with his restrained chemistry and his ability to convey pain without shedding a tear. He made silence his best dialogue.
That same year, he released The Roundup.
In this action film, he played Kang Hae-sang, a ruthless killer who faces off against Ma Dong-seok. The movie sold more than 12 million tickets in its home country. He went from being a niche actor to a box office draw in less than six months. The contrast between the introspective drama of television and the physical violence of film put him in a privileged position.
In 2023, he returned to his role in the second season of D.P. and led the cast of Big Bet alongside veteran Choi Min-sik. To film the latter, he spent months in the Philippines adapting to an exhausting production schedule. Still, his control over scene timing remained intact despite the shift in tone.
In 2024, he released A Killer Paradox on a global streaming platform, as well as the film Troll Factory. In the latter project, he plays a journalist who investigates the manipulation of public opinion online. Filming of Troll Factory was carried out with a budget of 7,000 million won under the direction of Ahn Gooc-jin.
