Chris Vance wasn't looking for the spotlight when he graduated in civil engineering from Newcastle University. He spent much of his youth analyzing structures and construction plans. But acting appeared as a necessary accident and took him straight to the London stages before he crossed the world.
No one expected that engineer to end up in Australia.
There he landed his first steady paycheck in television. He played Sean Everleigh in All Saints between 2005 and 2007. That experience on a medical drama taught him the frantic pace of daily shoots. He filmed more than fifty episodes before his character was abruptly written out of the main storyline.
His real break came with Prison Break. His role as James Whistler in the third season of the FOX series gave him global visibility. But filming coincided with the 2007 writers' strike in the United States, so his storyline was cut in ways no one could have foreseen at the time.
In 2009 he headed the cast of Mental. The series was shot in Bogotá to cut production costs. Vance played an unconventional psychiatrist who rode a bicycle through the halls of a hospital. The show lasted only thirteen episodes before the network canceled it due to low ratings.
And the bet only paid off partially.
Despite the failure of his series as a lead, the industry noticed his ability to carry the weight of an international production. In 2010 he joined the fifth season of Dexter to play Cole Harmon. It was a dark role that allowed him to move away from the traditional hero image he had cultivated until then.
His greatest physical challenge came with Transporter: The Series in 2012. Replacing Jason Statham in the role of Frank Martin required extreme athletic preparation. During filming of the first season in Toronto, production had to stop for several months because Vance suffered a spinal injury that put the project's continuity at risk.
His body said enough.
After recovering, he joined the cast of Rizzoli & Isles in a supporting role. Later he put on villain's armor to play Non in Supergirl during 2015. His physical presence and British accent often typecast him as secret agents or high-ranking military officers with traumatic pasts.
Between 2017 and 2020, he recurred on Hawaii Five-0 as Harry Langford. However, his career has always kept a low profile off camera. He doesn't frequent industry parties or chase easy applause on social media. He prefers the discretion afforded by his original technical training.
In 2024 he worked on The Equalizer, bringing to life a character tied to international espionage. The contract stipulated location shooting in urban New York settings under extreme cold conditions.
