Damon Wayans derailed his own career in 1986 out of pure boredom. He was part of the cast of Saturday Night Live and hated the supporting roles he was given. During a live sketch in which he was supposed to play an ordinary cop, he decided to rewrite the script on the fly. He played the officer in an extremely flamboyant and provocative way without warning the producers. Lorne Michaels fired him before the end of the broadcast.
But that firing was the engine of his creative independence. Damon did not want to be a extra in an industry that did not understand his humor. He came from a family of ten children in a public housing block in Harlem. His father sold spices and his mother was a social worker. His hunger for success was a matter of family survival.
Damon learned to spot the cracks in the system from a very young age.
In 1990, he premiered the sketch show In Living Color alongside his brother Keenen Ivory Wayans. It was a frontal attack on conventional American television. Damon created characters that became part of the popular imagination, such as Homey D. Clown. He was a resentful clown who hit children with a sock full of tennis balls. Audiences loved that comic violence because it hid a sharp social critique of exclusion.
In 1991, he made the leap to big-budget film with The Last Boy Scout. He shared the screen with Bruce Willis on a shoot that turned into a battleground of egos. Tony Scott directed the movie while the two leads avoided speaking to each other off camera. The tension was unbearable for the crew. Despite the problems, the film grossed nearly $60 million in the domestic market alone.
Damon earned a millionaire's salary and realized that action films were profitable but exhausting. So he began alternating commercial projects with his own scripts. In 1995, he wrote and starred in Major Payne. Critics tore the movie apart for its crude humor. Audiences, however, responded by filling theaters and turning it into a cult title on video store shelves.
And the bet on total control paid off.
In 2001, he launched the family comedy My Wife and Kids. Damon played Michael Kyle, an upper-middle-class father obsessed with teaching his children moral lessons through outrageous jokes. The show ran for five seasons on the ABC network. Production ended in 2005 after 123 episodes were taped, and its syndication still generates massive residual income.
In 2016, he accepted the role of Roger Murtaugh in the TV adaptation of Lethal Weapon. It was a personal miscalculation. Damon had type 2 diabetes, and 16-hour shooting days under the Los Angeles sun drastically hurt his health. His clashes with co-star Clayne Crawford led to a public relations crisis for the studio Warner Bros.
Damon left the series in 2018, saying he was too old for that level of physical demands.
In 2024, he returned to multi-camera television with Poppa’s House for the CBS network. In this project, he shares the spotlight with his son, Damon Wayans Jr. The series revives the classic format of a sitcom filmed live in front of a studio audience at Paramount studios. The production contract included a creative oversight clause to avoid the conflicts of his previous shoots.
The first season of this series was shot on a production budget of two million dollars per episode.
