Danielle Rose Russell was born in 1999 and grew up in a home where show business was the family trade. Her mother danced with the Rockettes and her father worked in music. Being so close to the stage made it easy for her to be posing for ad campaigns by the age of ten.
Her film debut came in 2014 with A Walk Among the Tombstones. She was fourteen when she shot a dark thriller alongside Liam Neeson, a project that had little in common with the teen productions of the time. It was a no-nonsense, professional entry into the Hollywood industry.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2017, she took part in Wonder under the direction of Stephen Chbosky. The movie earned more than three hundred million dollars worldwide and helped casting directors notice her ability to convey restrained drama. But the real turning point in her career wouldn't come from the big screen, but from an established television franchise.
Her arrival on The Originals in 2018 presented both a logistical and a narrative challenge. Playing Hope Mikaelson meant bringing to life the most powerful character in a universe with millions of fans. Russell took on the role in the fifth season of the series and won over an audience that is often unforgiving about cast changes.
So The CW decided to build a new story around her. Legacies premiered in late 2018 and aired for four seasons. The actress led the project, playing a teenager dealing with family trauma and supernatural powers at a fictional boarding school.
Starred in sixty-eight episodes as the series' lead.
During the years of filming in Georgia, the actress had a complicated relationship with digital fame. She stepped away from social media several times to protect her mental health from criticism of her looks. Because the pressure around appearance in teen productions is often suffocating for young actresses.
When Legacies was canceled in 2022, the actress didn't rush into another long-running series. She chose to keep a low professional profile for several months. She wanted to distance herself from the young heroine label the public had given her after nearly five years of nonstop work.
In 2023, she began managing her career from a more independent perspective. Russell has shown interest in producing and in scripts that move away from commercial fantasy. It's a slow but necessary transition to avoid the typecasting that many faces from American broadcast television suffer.
Her role in The Last World confirms this shift toward independent film. It's a post-apocalyptic project that demands a physical and emotional effort far removed from the cardboard-and-plaster sets of her earlier work.
Filming of this independent production wrapped with a total budget of four million dollars.
