David Giuntoli didn't land in Hollywood with a godfather or a famous last name. His first big paycheck came in 2003 thanks to an MTV reality show that followed a trip across the South Pacific. That money paid off college debts and bought a one-way ticket to Los Angeles.
But the industry doesn't give anything away.
For years, he landed tiny roles on shows like Veronica Mars or Grey’s Anatomy. These were one-afternoon jobs that barely covered rent in a city that chews up aspiring actors. In 2007, he took part in the pilot of The World According to Barnes, but the project never made it to air.
The reality-show guy label weighed more than expected in California casting rooms. Casting directors were looking for method actors, and he had just eaten bugs on camera in a survival competition.
In 2011, the script for Grimm arrived, and everything finally clicked. Playing Nick Burkhardt required a strange balance between classic police procedural and the dark fantasy of fairy tales. It wasn't a role for an over-the-top actor but for someone who could keep his composure while a stuntman in a wolf costume attacked him in a Portland forest.
The series stayed on air until 2017, with a total of 123 episodes filmed.
And the gamble paid off.
During that shoot, he met Elizabeth Tulloch. The chemistry between their characters spilled off the set, and they ended up getting married in 2017 in a private ceremony in Montana. By then, Giuntoli was no longer the MTV guy but a face capable of carrying a cable TV franchise with millions of viewers.
Six seasons later, the clock stopped.
After the police fantasy series ended, he looked for something that would let him take off the leather jacket and the regulation sidearm. In 2018, he joined the cast of A Million Little Things to bring Eddie Saville to life. The change was drastic: he went from hunting monsters to playing an alcoholic musician in the middle of a marriage crisis.
ABC's production was shot entirely in Vancouver to stand in for the streets of Boston. There, Giuntoli explored a much more vulnerable side, far removed from the physical action that had first made him famous.
But his ambition didn't stop at being in front of the camera. In 2022, he moved behind the camera to direct episode 14 of the series' fourth season. It was a strategic move to prepare his future in the industry beyond his ability to memorize dialogue.
In 2023, he voiced Bruce Wayne in the animated movie Batman: The Doom That Came to Gotham. The actor recorded his voice sessions at a Los Angeles studio under the supervision of Warner Bros Animation. The film was released directly in digital formats and on Blu-ray, with a running time of exactly 86 minutes.
