Brian Tee isn't really called Brian Tee. His real name is Jae-Beom Takata, and he was born in Okinawa in 1977. Before stepping onto a set, he grew up in Hacienda Heights, California, surrounded by a mix of cultures that would shape his approach to acting.
He chose his stage name because, on 1990s casting directors' lists, a Japanese surname closed off too many options. He wanted something neutral. Nearly 30 years of career confirm that this pragmatic decision let him move between genres without getting trapped in the martial arts actor stereotype.
In 2006 he played D.K. in The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. That villain with a luxury car gave him worldwide visibility that Asian actors rarely found in early-2000s Hollywood. But action cinema was only a surface Tee wanted to break through.
And then everything changed.
Between 2015 and 2022, the actor broke into mainstream television with the role of Dr. Ethan Choi in Chicago Med. It was his most stable stretch and the project that taught him how the NBC machine works. He appeared in a total of 131 episodes before leaving the series to pursue projects with more dramatic weight.
Television was his refuge for nearly a decade.
But acting on set wasn't enough for him. During his final years on the medical drama, he decided to step behind the camera and direct the episode titled Know When to Hold 'Em. It was his first real step toward a professional maturity that no longer depended on someone hiring him to act.
In 2024, he premiered Expats on Prime Video. In this limited series directed by Lulu Wang, he plays Clarke and shares the spotlight with Nicole Kidman. The role demanded an emotional restraint that was completely removed from the big franchises of explosions and car chases.
He founded his own company, Leading Man Productions. The company's goal is to create stories where men of Asian descent take lead roles, far from the usual clichés of the American industry. He signed a development deal to create original content that gives voice to his own vision of the global market.
Before filming, he reads the script looking for the human conflict beneath the pyrotechnics. So his addition to the third season of Reacher in 2025 came as no surprise to industry analysts. In this production he plays Quinn, returning to physical thriller territory but now with a prestige position already established in the actors' union.
The gamble paid off.
His career now balances running his production company with carefully selected supporting roles on major streaming platforms. By 2024, his presence at international television festivals had become steady, thanks to the critical impact of his work in high-budget family dramas. The production of his new projects for 2026 carries an estimated budget of 40 million dollars per season.
