Demi Lovato walked into Disney's offices with a guitar and a confidence unusual for a fifteen-year-old. The year was 2007. That audition for the movie Camp Rock not only won her the lead role (Mitchie Torres) but also kicked off one of the studio's biggest commercial operations of that decade.
The film premiered in 2008 and drew nearly nine million viewers on its first broadcast. Disney saw the opportunity and went straight from filming Sonny with a Chance into worldwide tours, leaving barely any room to rest. But the work system was so rigid that Lovato began showing emotional cracks long before the specialized press was willing to admit it.
The pace was unbearable.
In 2010, she abruptly walked out of the tour with the Jonas Brothers after a physical incident with one of her dancers on a plane. It was the first sudden halt in a career that seemed unstoppable. The studio had to cancel dates and rewrite scripts because the image of the perfect girl had shattered into a thousand pieces.
After some time out of the spotlight, she returned to television in 2012 as a judge on the American version of The X Factor. She earned one million dollars per season for her debut. The show was looking for freshness but found a far more cautious professional who questioned the pressure the format placed on its younger contestants.
And the gamble paid off.
Her acting career became more selective from then on. In 2013, she took a supporting role in season five of Glee, playing Dani, an artist who had a relationship with Naya Rivera's character. That was no publicity stunt. Lovato was looking for projects that moved away from the children's storylines that had typecast her during the previous five years.
She voiced Smurfette in Smurfs: The Lost Village during 2017. The film grossed 197 million dollars worldwide. It was a behind-the-scenes voice-over job (in the recording booth) that let her stay in the film industry without the physical toll of long on-set shoots.
In 2020, she appeared in the Netflix film Eurovision Song Contest: The Story of Fire Saga alongside Will Ferrell. She played Katiana, an Icelandic singer who suffers a pyrotechnic accident on stage. It was a brief role, but it showed she could handle satirical comedy with ease.
But the real change of direction came behind the camera.
In September 2024, she premiered the documentary Child Star on Hulu. Lovato not only starred in it but also made her directorial debut, sharing credit with Nicola Marsh. For this project, she interviewed other former child actors such as Drew Barrymore and Christina Ricci to examine the systemic impact of early fame.
The production of this documentary had a technical crew of more than fifty people. The final cut ran exactly 90 minutes. The film was shot mainly in Los Angeles during the first half of 2024 under the supervision of OBB Pictures.
