Drew Barrymore isn't an actress who learned the craft at a drama school. She learned it in front of a 35-millimeter camera under the watchful eye of Steven Spielberg while the whole world fell in love with a seven-year-old girl. She was 1982 years old when the release of E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial put her on a pedestal that, given her genes and context, turned out to be a glass trap.
The daughter of John Drew Barrymore and Jaid Barrymore, she carried the weight of a dynasty of performers that dated back to the 19th century. But Hollywood dynasties often come with addiction and abandonment. By age ten she was already hanging out at Studio 54, and at thirteen she checked into her first rehab center for drug and alcohol use.
The industry wrote her off before she turned fifteen.
In 1989, she published her autobiography Little Girl Lost. It was a desperate move to purge the demons of a childhood that never really existed. Soon after, she won legal emancipation from her parents and started working in coffee shops to pay the rent on a modest apartment in Los Angeles. Nobody wanted to hire the Spielberg girl because the stigma of a broken toy was too heavy for the studios' insurers.
But her will to survive was stronger than the producers' rejection.
The 1990s marked a complete rebuilding of her public image. After appearing in minor films and B-movie thrillers such as Poison Ivy in 1992, she understood that real control lay not in front of the spotlight but in making decisions. In 1995, she founded Flower Films with Nancy Juvonen with a clear goal. She wanted to stop waiting for calls that never came and start developing her own projects.
And the gamble paid off.
Her appearance in Scream in 1996 lasted only twelve minutes but changed the course of modern horror cinema. Barrymore insisted on playing the first victim to defy audience expectations. That commercial savvy was confirmed with The Wedding Singer in 1998, where she formed a partnership with Adam Sandler that still generates millions at the box office.
Flower Films produced Charlie's Angels in 2000.
The film grossed more than $260 million worldwide. It was more than a blockbuster hit: it confirmed Barrymore as one of the most powerful producers in the industry. She was no longer the little girl crying over an alien, but the woman who decided who directed and how much was spent on special effects in the major blockbusters of the era.
She took creative risks throughout her later career. In 2001, she financed Donnie Darko when nobody understood Richard Kelly's script. She took a supporting role as a teacher just to make sure the film would get distribution. Without her involvement, that cult title probably never would have reached commercial theaters.
She made her directing debut in 2009 with Whip It. The movie received positive reviews, but Barrymore preferred to focus on television acting years later. In 2017, she starred in the Netflix series Santa Clarita Diet for three seasons. She played a suburban mother who turns into a zombie in a bloody satire of American suburban life.
In September 2020, she launched The Drew Barrymore Show. The daytime talk show format let her step away from fiction and explore a more direct, unfiltered side as a communicator. The show was taped in New York and managed to stay on the air, weathering the ratings crises that sank other competitors in the sector during the same period.
Despite her constant media exposure, she runs a tight-lipped business structure. Flower Films independently manages her image rights and her beauty and home product lines. In 2023, the company renewed its main distribution agreements under a contract that prioritizes creating content for digital platforms. The company's headquarters employs fewer than twenty full-time staff.
