Until the age of twelve, Emily Blunt could not say her own name without stumbling over the syllables. The stammer was so severe that the girl avoided long conversations in the hallways of her school in London. A high school teacher suggested she try acting to see whether using different accents might ease her diction.
It worked right away.
In 2001, she made her stage debut alongside Judi Dench in the play The Royal Family. That experience marked a grand entrance into the British industry. But Blunt's name didn't hit the global radar until she moved to Los Angeles to shoot The Devil Wears Prada in 2006.
Meryl Streep was the project's undisputed star, but a little-known British supporting actress ended up winning the best reviews. Blunt played the neurotic assistant with a mix of bite and fragility that wasn't in the original script. In fact, she herself proposed much of the wardrobe and the character's quirks.
Because Emily Blunt sees filmmaking as an exercise in physical observation.
After the success of 2006, many expected her to stay typecast in sharp-tongued comedy. She chose otherwise. In 2009, she starred in The Young Victoria and proved she could carry a period drama with the poise of a seasoned veteran. Her salary for that production was one million dollars, a figure she would multiply in her subsequent contracts.
In 2014, she took on the challenge of Edge of Tomorrow alongside Tom Cruise. The shoot was a constant physical challenge. The combat suit she wore weighed nearly 40 kilos, and Blunt had to train for three months in Krav Maga. That was when she shed her image as a drama actress and moved into major action productions.
Her collaboration with her husband John Krasinski on A Quiet Place in 2018 changed the way she chose projects. The film cost 17 million dollars and grossed more than 340 million dollars worldwide. Blunt accepted the role only after reading the script and convincing Krasinski that no one else could play that mother.
And the risk was worth it.
In 2023, she landed the role of Kitty Oppenheimer under the direction of Christopher Nolan. Blunt played the physicist's wife with a restraint that erupted in a single interrogation scene. That performance earned her first Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actress at the 2024 ceremony. She didn't take home the statuette, but her presence at the gala confirmed her standing at the top of the industry.
In 2024, she released The Fall Guy alongside Ryan Gosling in an attempt to revive the spirit of classic action cinema. The production had an estimated budget of 130 million dollars.
