Jason Segel is six feet, two inches tall, and in high school he was nicknamed Doctor Dunk because he slammed the ball through the hoop with force. He shared a locker room with future NBA pros in Los Angeles. But theater appealed to him far more than painting the court.
Judd Apatow spotted him at a school audition and cast him in Freaks and Geeks in 1999. The series barely lasted eighteen episodes on air before network executives decided to pull the plug due to low ratings. Apatow hit him with an uncomfortable truth as soon as he gathered his things. He told him that, with that gangly body and everyday-guy face, nobody in Hollywood was going to write roles tailored to him.
So Segel bought a computer and learned to pound away at the keyboard out of sheer survival instinct at work.
That recommendation saved his future.
In 2005, he signed on to play Marshall Eriksen in How I Met Your Mother for the CBS network. Nine seasons of steady pay and sofa-based jokes gave him the financial cushion he needed to write whatever he wanted in his free time.
The result was Forgetting Sarah Marshall in 2008. The film opened with a musician in crisis receiving the news that his girlfriend was breaking up with him while he stood completely naked in front of her. That humiliation had really happened to him years earlier in his apartment. Instead of hiding it, he decided to film it just as it was, in front of millions of viewers.
The comedy cost thirty million dollars and grossed more than 105 million at the international box office.
Segel later had the idea of bringing Jim Henson's characters back to life. In 2011 he convinced Disney's top brass to shoot The Muppets with an original script that included an opera about Dracula sung by plush puppets.
The gamble paid off perfectly.
When the TV comedy ended in 2014, many expected Segel to churn out silly comedies for quick weekend consumption. He didn't. Instead, he shut himself away for weeks in a country house to memorize hours of audio tapes of writer David Foster Wallace's voice.
In 2015, he starred in The End of the Tour alongside Jesse Eisenberg. The film chronicled the final days of the promotional tour for the novel Infinite Jest, and Segel appeared with a bandana on his head, tiny glasses, and a raw melancholy that caught American critics off guard. The role earned him a nomination for Best Actor at the Independent Spirit Awards that year.
In 2020, he took another sharp turn as creator of the series Somewhere Else for AMC. He shot an experimental story in Philadelphia that baffled critics but allowed him to make his directing debut behind the camera.
In 2023, he teamed up with Bill Lawrence and Brett Goldstein to launch Shrinking on Apple TV+. The starting point was the nosedive of Jimmy Laird, a widowed psychologist who decides to ignore professional ethics and tell his patients exactly what he thinks of their lives.
Harrison Ford agreed to join the project to play his mentor in the therapist's office, with one condition locked into the contract. He would not shoot more than four days a week under any circumstances. Segel shouldered the grueling marathon workdays, and the production completed its three-season run in 2026.
In the final episode aired in April 2026, the crew spent twelve hours shooting under the California sun in Pasadena to capture a four-minute conversation between two men sitting on a café terrace.
