Eric Winter wasn't chasing fame when he walked the halls of UCLA. He graduated with a degree in psychology, hoping to understand the human mind, but ended up using that knowledge to build characters. Modeling was the bridge that paid the bills before he moved into fiction.
In 2002, he landed the role of Rex DiMera on the soap opera Days of Our Lives. He stayed until 2005. It was an intense learning period in which he shot scenes at an absurd pace. He learned that television waits for no one.
The industry soon typecast him as the square-jawed leading man.
But Winter wanted to break free of that catalog-perfect pretty-boy image. He appeared in series such as The Mentalist, playing Craig O'Laughlin between 2010 and 2012. That character allowed him to explore a duality the audience didn't expect. As a result, his name started coming up in casting directors' offices for projects with greater dramatic depth.
In 2018, ABC launched The Rookie, and Winter's career found a new focus. The role of Tim Bradford moved him away from supporting love-interest parts. He took on the role of a strict, almost military training officer. Sergeant Bradford is the emotional engine of the series for many fans.
And the gamble paid off.
During filming of the fifth season in 2022, the actor had to go through a rigorous physical training program. The producers wanted the tactical movements to look real. Winter spent weeks with Los Angeles police officers to learn how to hold a weapon under pressure. He didn't want his performance to look like a simple choreographed dance.
In 2024, the series reached its sixth year on air with strong audiences in the United States. The on-screen relationship with the character Lucy Chen created a social media phenomenon that the production made the most of. But Winter always kept the necessary distance between digital fandom and his technical work on set.
Off camera, his life doesn't follow the typical Hollywood script. In 2008, he married actress Roselyn Sánchez in a ceremony in San Juan, Puerto Rico. Together they decided to diversify their income beyond studio paychecks. In 2017, they published the children's book Sebi and the Land of Cha Cha Cha, inspired by their daughter.
But not everything in his career was a commercial success. Winter tried to develop several projects as an independent producer that never received the green light from major studios. The failure in production taught him that creative control in the entertainment industry is an expensive privilege.
In 2021, he launched the podcast He Said, Ella Dijo with his wife. The show focuses on cultural differences and the challenges of living together. It is a bilingual-market product that remains active after more than a hundred episodes. Winter manages his public image like a family business, where every move is calculated.
His contract with the producers of The Rookie stipulates filming days that sometimes exceed fourteen hours a day on location in California. The base salary for actors at his level in national network productions ranges from 40,000 to 80,000 dollars per episode filmed. The sixth season ended production with a total of ten episodes due to schedule adjustments caused by the industry strikes.
