Esra Dermancıoğlu didn't step onto a professional set until the age of 40. Many in Istanbul saw it as a whim of late-blooming maturity. But she knew that time was not an obstacle but a competitive advantage.
In 2010, Turkish television needed a face that broke away from the usual aesthetic standards for young leading women. The casting call for Fatmagül’ün Suçu Ne? was looking for a woman capable of embodying the envy and pettiness of Mukaddes Ketenci. She was the one. She made millions of viewers hate her character with a performance that left no trace of compassion.
Esra didn't seek easy applause.
Before acting, she studied Art History in Switzerland. That academic background gave her a different perspective on how spaces are built and on the psychology of her characters. In 2014 she appeared in the film Kadın İşi: Banka Soygunu, where she handled black comedy with a precision that surprised local critics.
In 2019, she joined the shoot of Bir Zamanlar Çukurova to play Behice Hekimoğlu. It was a job of complete restraint. Her fee per episode reflected her status as an actress the production needed to carry the dramatic weight of the most complex secondary storylines.
And the gamble paid off.
Many actors fear being typecast in negative roles. Esra prefers it. She understands that darkness on screen demands a level of technical control not everyone has. In 2021 she worked on Kaderimin Oyunu under intense media pressure due to the massive export of the series to Latin American markets.
During the filming of 2022 for the series Bir Küçük Gün Işığı, the actress brought a working style built on controlled improvisation. She rarely reads press coverage online. She prefers to focus on the modulation of her voice and the impact of her subtle gestures on camera.
Her time at acting schools in the United States allowed her to move away from the traditional melodramatic style of Ottoman productions. So when she returned to her home country, her approach proved disruptive for directors. She gave up her marriage because her partner at the time did not accept that she was starting an acting career at such an advanced age.
She chose creative independence over domestic stability.
In 2023, production company MedYapım signed her for the series Hudutsuz Sevda in the role of Asiye Leto. Filming took place on location in the province of Artvin. Workdays often exceeded twelve hours in quite extreme mountain weather conditions.
The contract for this production included an exclusivity clause that limited her public appearances until the end of 2024.
