Finn Wolfhard landed their first role through an ad on Craigslist. They were eleven years old, and the project was an independent short film shot in 2013. That homegrown decision launched a career that bypassed the usual channels of child talent agencies in Vancouver.
Luck had nothing to do with it.
In 2016, Stranger Things premiered and the world met Mike Wheeler. Filming the first season demanded a level of dramatic restraint that is unusual for preteens. Meanwhile, the production had to deal with the actors' growth spurts, which required costume adjustments almost every week.
The success of the Netflix series allowed him to jump into big-budget films with the adaptation of It in 2017. He played Richie Tozier, and the movie grossed over $700 million worldwide. That figure proved his ability to carry commercial horror stories without losing his natural charisma.
In 2019, they appeared in The Goldfinch, a film with lukewarm reviews but a useful experience working alongside big names in the industry. Their real interest, however, has always been divided between acting and music. They formed the band Calpurnia and recorded the EP Scout in 2018 before disbanding the group over creative differences.
And the gamble paid off.
Wolfhard's ties to the classic franchises grew stronger in 2021 with the release of Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Director Jason Reitman was looking for a presence that would connect with the original 1980s legacy. The film performed well enough to secure his return in the sequel Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, released in 2024.
Total control came with the script.
In 2023, they co-wrote and directed their first feature film, Hell of a Summer. The movie is an independent horror comedy shot with Billy Bryk. Directing a feature film before turning twenty-two defines their priorities in the film industry.
In 2024, production on the fifth and final season of Stranger Things faced significant technical delays. Filming stretched on for months in Atlanta under strict security measures to prevent leaks. The budget per episode topped 30 million dollars.
