Frida Gustavsson is 1.84 meters tall, which was a problem when finding clothes in her size before the world knew her name. In 2008, a talent scout stopped her in a Stockholm store, and within just a few months her face was plastered across billboards across half the planet.
In 2012, she opened Valentino's haute couture show in Paris. That year she worked in more than 60 different shows for brands like Prada and Chanel, and her career seemed to have no technical ceiling. But the creative emptiness of being just a luxury clothes hanger pushed her to make a drastic decision.
The fashion industry had become too small for her.
In 2015, she decided to leave the international runway circuit to focus on studying acting at the Boulevardteatern school in Stockholm. She didn't want to be a model who makes movies, but an actress who once was a model. She turned down million-dollar contracts to start from scratch in auditions where no one remembered her magazine covers on glossy paper.
And the gamble paid off.
Her first steps on Swedish screens were modest but solid. In 2019, she starred in the film Swoon (Eld & lågor), playing Ninni Nilsson in a love story set in an amusement park. That role gave her the visibility needed for casting directors outside Scandinavia to start noticing her commanding presence and her control of body language.
That same year, she appeared in the first season of The Witcher for Netflix. Her role as Visenna (Geralt of Rivia's mother) lasted only a few minutes on screen, but her icy gaze and physical presence convinced producers of major-league potential. So the leap to global streaming was only a matter of time and finding the right character.
In 2020, she joined the cast of the series Partisan. This Swedish thriller allowed her to explore much darker roles, far from the clean aesthetic of her years in New York. But the real turning point came when she was offered the chance to lead the return of one of the most powerful franchises in contemporary television.
To play Freydis Eiriksdottir in Vikings: Valhalla, she had to learn to handle a sword and shield in the rain of Ireland. In 2022, the first season of the series premiered, and her portrayal of the pagan warrior quickly overshadowed her male co-stars. The show didn't seek delicate beauty but raw strength, which Gustavsson delivered without holding back in every combat scene.
In 2022, she also took part in the shoot of Dampyr in Italy. This adaptation of a cult comic marked her entry into pure, hardcore fantasy genre film. Although the production had an uneven theatrical release, it confirmed that her name could already sell tickets on its own in European markets.
Filming for the third season of Vikings: Valhalla officially wrapped in 2024. This installment closed her character's story arc and marked the end of a three-year chapter spent almost entirely on fictional battlefields. The production used more than 1,000 extras in its final sequences to bring Freydis's story to a close.
Frida Gustavsson lives in Stockholm with her husband Marcel Engdahl, whom she married in 2022. Her name is linked to two independent production projects in Sweden scheduled for 2026. The total budget for the final season of her Viking series exceeded €35 million per episode block.
