Fumika Baba wasn't looking for fame. She simply agreed to pose for the Niigata Bishojo Zukan when a talent scout stopped her on the street. The year was 2010 and she was barely fifteen. That local publication was not a national platform, but it helped Tokyo agencies take notice of her profile.
It was the start of a machine that has never stopped.
In 2014, she landed the role that often defines the future of young actors in Japan. She played Medic in Kamen Rider Drive. There, she showed she could carry a character with dark nuances under the aesthetic of a children's series. And she did it without losing the naturalness that a fast-paced shoot demands.
While shooting genre films, she kept her contract with the magazine non-no. She was an exclusive model between 2015 and 2021. Brands sought the mix of shyness and physical presence that the gravure industry had exploited in its early years. But Baba had plans that went beyond swimsuit photo shoots.
2017 was the year of her definitive leap to mass television. She joined the third season of Code Blue to bring Futaba Natsumi to life. Breaking into a franchise that is already a national hit is not easy. But Baba managed to give her character real weight alongside veteran stars of the caliber of Tomohisa Yamashita.
The audience stopped seeing her as a model who acted.
She took part in The Many Faces of Ito in 2018. A year later, she starred in Nee Sensei, Shiranai no?, playing a manga artist obsessed with her work. This production was key because it topped the digital ratings charts for several consecutive weeks. Her name began to be considered for projects with much darker dramatic themes.
Because the Japanese market rewards consistency. Baba took on one shoot after another without rest, and in 2020 she played a young woman searching for love through algorithms in Line no Kotaeawase. Before filming that series, she spent weeks studying how real users behave on social media.
In 2022, she accepted the role of Yuri in Koi to Dangan. The series explored an intense relationship with a yakuza member, moving away from the innocent image of her early career. It was a decision that racked up millions of views on international streaming platforms. Critics praised her ability to convey vulnerability and strength in a setting of fictional violence.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2023, she joined the cast of Fuufu ga Kowareru Toki. It is a Japanese adaptation of the British Doctor Foster, in which she plays the protagonist's mistress. It is a thankless role by definition, but Baba handled it with a technical coolness that avoided the cliché of the daytime TV villain. During that same period, she also appeared in the film Kishibe Rohan wa Ugokanai.
In 2024, her schedule included mid-level projects that prioritize the script over box office appeal. The production of Namari no Hako set its budget at around 200 million yen to ensure quality interior sets. Filming of her final scenes wrapped on a November Tuesday in heavy rain at the Toei studios.
