Ryo Narita was 1.82 meters tall when he decided that being a runway model was too limiting. In 2013, he joined the staff of the magazine Men's Non-no, but his eyes were set on television scripts. He didn't want to be just a hanger for luxury brands in the upscale neighborhoods of Tokyo.
And she got them fast.
In 2014, she made her debut in the crime drama Flashback, and from that point on she avoided traditional leading-man roles. She prefers complex characters or somewhat scruffy types who break away from Japanese aesthetic perfection. Her refusal to take flat roles defined her work pace in the years that followed.
Before turning twenty-five, he had already taken on projects in opposite genres. In 2017, his role in Code Blue Season 3 gave him the visibility he needed to enter the circuit of major commercial productions in Japan. But the actor was looking for something more than millions of viewers on national television.
2019 was the key period for his technical credibility in the film industry. He starred in Talking the Pictures under the direction of Masayuki Suo and won the Newcomer of the Year award at the Japan Academy Film Prize. Playing an aspiring silent film narrator required grueling vocal training over several months.
So his success was not a matter of chance but of pure technique. During that same period, he lent his voice to the animated film Weathering with You, directed by Makoto Shinkai. The project grossed more than 190 million dollars worldwide and put his name in the credits of one of the biggest milestones in Japanese cinema of the decade.
But the real risk came in 2020 with The Cornered Mouse Dreams of Cheese. In this film, he played an obsessive man in a complex, tension-filled homosexual relationship. Critics praised his ability to hold uncomfortable silences without relying on exaggerated gestures.
Narita chooses projects based on the director, not the paycheck.
In 2021, he worked on Homunculus, a psychological horror adaptation distributed globally by Netflix. The shoot required night shifts in run-down areas to capture a truly oppressive atmosphere. It was one of the most physically demanding productions of his career up to that point.
Because for Narita, filmmaking is a process of external transformation. He often changes his hairstyle or weight dramatically to move away from his image as an advertising model. In 2023, he took part in the drama The Village, exploring the power dynamics of a closed rural society in Japan.
In 2024, he filmed the series House of the Owl for Disney+. This production, about the sewers of political power, kept him busy for much of the shooting period, which took place on location in Kanto Prefecture. The series' confidentiality agreement prohibited any leaks about his character's fate before the official premiere.
The production budget for this latest series exceeded the usual figures for conventional Japanese television.
