Gaite Jansen was born in Rotterdam in 1991 and didn't wait until adulthood to understand how a film set works. By the age of just 12, she was already working in local productions in the Netherlands. But it was in 2011 that her name began to make waves among European casting directors after starring in 170 Hz.
In that film, she played a deaf teenager who communicates through sign language. It was a physical, raw performance. Dutch critics nominated her for the Golden Calf, the most important award in her country, confirming that her career was no flash in the pan.
And the gamble paid off.
Before making the leap to the English-speaking market, she trained at the Maastricht Academy of Dramatic Arts. There she refined a technique that let her move from fragility to coldness without barely moving a muscle in her face. This coolness was precisely what caught the attention of BBC producers.
In 2016, she joined the cast of the third season of Peaky Blinders. Playing Grand Duchess Tatiana Petrovna marked a big jump in her international visibility. The character was an erratic and dangerous Russian aristocrat that pushed Jansen into a far more theatrical register than she had shown in her national cinema.
Sharing scenes with Cillian Murphy didn't intimidate her. As a result, her performance as Tatiana became one of the most talked-about moments of that installment of the series. Global audiences discovered an actress capable of holding her own alongside the most veteran leads in the British television industry.
The British market doesn't forgive mistakes.
After her success in Birmingham came other high-profile projects in the islands. In 2017, she took part in the fourth season of Line of Duty, one of the most-watched police dramas on British television. There she played Hana Reznikova, a supporting role but one that was key to the corruption storyline driving the season.
In 2019, she crossed the Atlantic to shoot Jett under the direction of Sebastian Gutierrez. In this action series, she played Phoenix, sharing the cast with Carla Gugino. It was her first serious foray into the American market, although the production kept a European noir tone that suited her previous profile.
Still, Jansen never fully left the productions of her home country. In 2020, she starred in the series Hollands Hoop, proving she could balance big international budgets with local stories of deep dramatic weight. This ability to work across two different markets has kept her from being typecast as the exotic foreigner.
In 2022, she reunited with Sebastian Gutierrez on the series Leopard Skin. Filming took place in the Dominican Republic, and Jansen played "Batty" within an ensemble cast that once again included Hollywood names. The production was shot entirely during the health crisis, which forced the whole crew to live in a creative bubble for months.
Her career is a model of control.
In 2024, she shot the adventure series Kraakeiland, a Dutch production directed by Joost Reijmers. The project had a higher production budget than usual for local standards and was filmed in various locations in Belgium to create an atmosphere of mystery and survival.
