Gaten Matarazzo

The Kid Who Broke the Broadway Mold

Gaten Matarazzo was born in Connecticut in 2002 with a genetic condition called cleidocranial dysplasia. This disorder affects the growth of the bones and teeth, but it didn't stop him from performing on the boards of the Palace Theatre by age nine. In 2011, he made his debut in the musical Priscilla, Queen of the Desert and showed that his vocal ability was far above average for his age.

The entertainment industry often looks for physical perfection in child casts. Matarazzo broke that pattern out of necessity and through talent. In 2014, he played Gavroche in the production of Les Misérables, and his name started turning up in casting offices in Los Angeles. But his big break didn't come from his voice; it came from an audition tape recorded in a living room.

The industry wasn't always kind.

In 2015, the Duffer Brothers were looking for kids for a mystery series set in the eighties. Matarazzo was the first of the five leads to be cast in Stranger Things. The creators were so impressed by his personality that they decided to write his real medical condition into the character's storyline. Dustin Henderson became a visible role model for thousands of people living with rare diseases.

The Price of Massive Exposure

The series' success in 2016 radically transformed his life. He went from being a New York stage actor to a figure who drew millions of followers on social media. Netflix capitalized on his media buzz and in 2019 gave him executive producing duties and hosting for Prank Encounters. The hidden-camera prank show ran for two seasons but received mixed reviews for its heavy tone.

And the gamble paid off.

Despite his worldwide fame, Matarazzo has always kept one foot outside Hollywood. In 2022, he decided to return to his roots and accepted the role of Jared Kleinman in the musical Dear Evan Hansen. It was a smart move to step away from the image of eternal kid his character projected on television. New York critics praised his technical maturity on stage.

That same year, she voiced the lead character in the animated film The Dragon Prince. It was a studio job she balanced with filming Honor Society for Paramount+. In this feature, she played a brilliant but socially awkward student and proved she could carry a lead role outside of science fiction.

Return to Darkness and Final Numbers

In 2023, he joined the cast of the new Broadway production of Sweeney Todd alongside Josh Groban. Playing Tobias Ragg posed a major vocal challenge due to the complexity of Stephen Sondheim's scores. Matarazzo moved away from lighthearted comedies for good to embrace roles with much denser dramatic weight.

Theater is his real refuge.

Filming for the fifth and final season of Stranger Things began in January 2024 after several months of delays caused by the writers' and actors' strikes. This production will close a nearly decade-long chapter tied to the same streaming platform. Salaries for the main cast rose in stages, and in this final stretch Matarazzo is reportedly earning close to seven million dollars for the full season.

The production contract requires filming to wrap before 2025 so the show can move straight into post-production. The visual effects workload for the final eight episodes requires nearly twelve months of rendering. Matarazzo has already signed on for a new stage project with the New York independent theater circuit that does not require dental prosthetics.
