George Blagden hit the big screen in 2012 with a suitcase full of stage technique learned at the Guildhall School in London. His first big break wasn't a small role in a neighborhood series. It was Les Misérables. That year he shared the screen with Hugh Jackman and learned that in musical film, silence is as important as the scream.
And the industry took notice.
In 2013, he moved to the valleys of Ireland to shoot Vikings. He played Athelstan for 28 episodes. His exit from the series in 2015 was not due to a lack of interest from the writers but to a narrative need to close Ragnar Lothbrok's arc. That Saxon monk gave him the platform he needed to jump to France.
In 2015, he signed on to star in Versailles. For three seasons, he led a production that cost nearly 3 million euros per episode. Filming stretched until 2018 and required him to live in Paris for long stretches. But the physical toll of playing Louis XIV led him to seek refuge in the London theater.
The budget was in charge.
In 2018, he returned to the stage in Tartuffe at the Theatre Royal Haymarket. Shortly after, he joined the cast of Company, the Stephen Sondheim musical that ran between 2018 and 2019. His work there moved away from silk capes and cardboard castles.
In 2017, he appeared in the episode Hang the DJ of the series Black Mirror. It was a brief foray into dystopian science fiction that performed well on the platform's metrics. But his main interest remained in projects where the script demanded absolute control of the voice.
His work shifted toward more experimental projects from 2022. He took part in Rubikon, an Austrian science fiction film shot entirely in English. In 2023, he appeared in The Great Escaper, playing a young Bernie. It was one of the last films of Michael Caine before their official retirement from the screen.
And the gamble paid off.
In 2024, he voiced a character in the animated film The Lord of the Rings: The War of the Rohirrim. The voice-over contract was signed months before the post-production phase in Japan. The dialogue was recorded in a London sound booth under the technical supervision of Warner Bros.
